A Drop Too Many

Whoops! Perhaps two drops were two too many! Hank knew something was awry the moment the beaker in his hand started to tremble, growing warm much too quickly. The formula inside began to froth and foam, bubbling and boiling at room temperature! And yet Hank found himself studying the volatile reaction rather than disposing of it.
“Curious. I could have sworn I’d made the proper measurements and calcul-ack!” The beaker suddenly erupted with a cloud of thick smoke right into his face, the surprise of it causing him to inhale, and drop the beaker to the floor beneath him where it shattered into a smoking puddle. Coughing and trying to wave off the smoke, he flipped off of the overhead bar and hurried to the ventilation vent switch, turning on the fans and sucking the thick smoke out of the room.
Still tasting the smoke on his tongue, Hank sighed. “Back to the drawing board, I suppose…” And then he noticed his own wet footprints leading from the puddle he’d made on the floor, having stepped through it in his haste. At least the glass bits hadn’t punctured the thick soles of his bare feet! Cleaning up the mess with the hazardous waste mop, Hank mulled over what could have gone wrong. But just then…
