Link was traveling through Hyrule collecting the three spiritual stones so that he and Zelda can put a stop to Ganondorf evil plan that they knew he had, but wasn't sure what it was exactly.
"Hey Link! Look over here!" Navi said as she flew off down to a small stone shrine that Link was sure that wasn't there last time he walked through this particular path.
Link looked at the shrine and saw a song and a small description Play this magical melody and you shall learn a new way of life.
Link thought for a second and decided to...
