It was the cold water lapping at Kyra's feet that woke her up. As consciousness slowly returned to her and her eyes adjusted to the dim light of the moon she realized that a pool of water had formed and was rapidly deepening in the boat. Then she realized what it meant.
In panic she leaned forward and cupped her hands, scooping up water and pouring it over the side. But it was too little too late- the water was already a foot deep and more was coming in fast. The leak she must have missed before had done its damage. Her boat was sinking fast.
Kyra swung her head around desperately, scanning for any sign of land over the dark horizon. But there was none. Only miles and miles of open ocean as far as she could see.
Hopelessness hit home when the boat sank below the waves. As it slipped into the depths beyond the reach of her feet, a horrible realization washed over Kyra- she couldn't swim. She fought frantically to stay afloat but her clothes weighed her down. Down into the depths as salt water entered her lungs...
