While running diagnostics, you find a critical error in the programming of the machine. If you had tested it out on that day, instead of performing a swap, one person's mind would have simply copied into and overwrote the mind of the other. It would have opened up a lot of complicated questions about the nature of the self and what makes us who we think we are.
You're a scientist, not a philosopher, so you make sure to correct this error. However, it takes the better part of a year to do it and finally reach a point where the machine is truly ready and safe for human testing. It's been an eventful year, and things have changed quite a bit. You finally graduated from High School, and performed some upgrades on your laboratory, moving from your garage into the basement. You've started college, opting to commute from home, but the course work is still easy for you, so you have ended up with a lot of free time to pick up a part time job.
As you're finishing up some calibrations on the machine, someone enters your lab.
