You're working on tweaking the machine late into the night. Even though you're anxious to do a live test, you want to make sure it's perfectly safe before you use it on anyone. You install extra scanners and filters to insure everything works as intended. After fastening a cushion to the seat of one of the pods, you turn to your desk and happen to glance up at the dark window up above, and see a face staring back at you.
You flinch in shock and your screwdriver goes flying. The young woman in the window giggles. "It's about time you noticed me," she says. Her words are muffled by the glass between you and her.
"Jesus Christ, Lena. What are you doing?"
"Just watching you..." Her voice trails off and you can't make out what she's saying.
"I can't hear you through that window. You might as well come inside, it's dangerous to be out this late."
You grab the garage door remote from your desk and turn to open it up for the girl, but you end up flinging it across the room when Lena greets you from behind. "Thank you for inviting me in," she says politely and as she curtsies.
"How the hell did you do that?" you try to ask calmly, but your heart is pounding. That's the second time in a couple minutes she's managed to get the jump on you. Lena just smiles innocently.
Lena is a young girl who lives in your neighborhood and long, blonde hair that almost glows in the moonlight. She wears all black and her hobby seems to be stalking around the neighborhood at night, and you've never seen her around during the day, but you're also quite the night owl. She comes to bother you all the time because you're probably the only other person awake at this hour. You aren't really sure how old she is, and you never get a straight answer out of her. When you first met her, she definitely seemed to be an older kid, but as time has passed, she seems younger than you now.
"You're extra jumpy tonight, Luke," Lena teases. "Are you tired? Nervous about something?" Maybe Lena just seems younger to you now because she's constantly playing tricks and teasing you. Not very mature hobbies for an adult. She's incredibly quiet and sneaky, and you've never been able to return the favor for all of the tricks. She's definitely clever. When she isn't teasing you, she asks questions and takes an interest in the things you're working on. Not dumb questions like most people, either.
Lena walks over to your machine and opens the door to one of the pods. "You've been working on this thing for quite a while, Luke." She runs her hand over the padding you just put on the seat. "If you're adding decorative features like this, it must be close to finished. Will you finally tell me what it does? I know you're simply dying to brag to someone!"
