The package that arrived at the shop that day didn’t bear Tyler’s name, or any name in fact, but it had his address and the postman even made him sign for it. If it hadn’t been an unusually busy day at the shop, he might’ve opened it there. But instead, he’d put it aside with his personal mail and ended up taking it home with him. The short walk to his building was uneventful, but as always he felt a bit of dread as he climbed the steps to the house he shared with his brother. There was always a chance that David would be home, and he never knew exactly how that would end, though it usually wasn’t in his favor. David was too much bigger and stronger.

Tyler sighed softly as he stopped on the porch and pulled his shoes off, splaying his bare toes on the porch and wiggling them against the wood. He crept up to the door and listened carefully, but didn’t hear any sounds from inside. He’d learned that the quiet didn’t necessarily mean David wasn’t there…but it did increase the odds that the purple dragon could make it to his room before his brother could catch him. He put his key in the door and turned it quietly, peeking his head inside. He let go of the breath he’d been holding as he glanced around. The coast seemed to be clear, at least for now.

He closed the door and locked it behind himself, sorting through the mail, feeling a little more relaxed now. He tossed the bills and things aside one by one before reaching the package and giving the label another glance. There was no return address, no name, just the address of his shop. Could it be a gift? Maybe something from his brother? Or an admirer? He slowly peeled the tape off and opened up the box, digging through the packaging until his fingers closed around something hard and firm. He raised an eyebrow as he pulled the object out, his eyes widening as he saw what it was.

It was about the size of a revolver, but the color was more of a gray metallic than the average gun metal. There was no obvious place to load it, either, but there was a dial on the side. There was only a sliding scale, smaller on one end but rising as the dial moved right. It looked almost like the volume on a radio. He stared at it blankly for a moment. “What...is this? Why would someone send me a gun?”

He toyed with it for a moment, fingers playing over the trigger, adjusting the dial. It made an audible click as he moved it from the center setting, turning it ‘up.’ He was moving to put the gun back in the box when his finger brushed the trigger, the gun firing with a hum. Tyler let out a gasp of surprise, expecting a bullet. Instead, a ray of red light flashed from the barrel of the gun, hitting the house plant in the hall way dead center. As the dragon watched, the plant began to change, the leaves seeming to shift. It took him a moment to understand what was happening, his mind having trouble processing it at first.

The plant was GROWING. Not just growing faster, but growing bigger, the leaves expanding, the stalk thickening...In just moments, it grew from a small shrub about half Tyler’s size to something resembling a small tree, nearly as tall as he was and just as thick. The pot actually cracked from the new, thicker roots, the soil forced upwards.

“Wow…does this mean…?” He stared at the gun in disbelief. “Is this some kind of growth ray?” He went back to the box immediately, inspecting it closely for any kind of logo or instructions, but there was nothing he could see. “Well…guess I’ll just have to test it a little…”

He toyed with the knob, this time dialing it back the other way, hearing the click at the center and pushing it all way ‘down.’ He looked around the room and found the perfect target: David’s recliner. It was a big, bulky chair, just like his brother, and Tyler had been the one who wound up paying for it. He smirked, as he imagined his brother laying back in the chair, blissfully unaware that his brother had a shrink ray pointed at him. A smile curled his lips as he took aim and fired.

It worked even better than he expected. A soft Green light fired from the ray, striking the chair and washing over it in a quick wave. Within seconds, the chair began to shrink, growing visibly smaller as Tyler watched, dwindling down, three feet, two feet…finally slowing until it was only an inch or so tall.

Tyler grinned widely, walking over to the chair. “What’s that David?” he said to the empty chair. “I can’t hear you all the way down there.” He smirked, hovering his bare paw over the recliner. “Oh, man…I could totally crush him at that size!” He pressed his foot down lightly, and even that light pressure caused something to snap in the chair. He laughed, bringing his foot all the way down, crushing it into the floor. “Ooops,” he chuckled. “Better watch out, bro!”

He chuckled, but his smile slowly faded into a more serious look. Could he really use the gun on his brother? It’s not as though he wouldn’t be justified in doing it…David was always lording his size over him, how much bigger and stronger he was. He thought about the look on his face as he walked through the door to find Tyler waiting for him, ray in hand.

He was so lost in thought in fact that he almost didn’t hear his brother’s footsteps approaching, the steps creaking with his weight. Tyler felt a flash of fear run through him. He had only seconds to decide what to do…if David saw the gun and got it away from him, it would be all over for him. He couldn’t even begin to imagine what kind of hell he would go through if David were suddenly much, much bigger than him. He was obnoxious enough at just a few feet.

what to do... what to do...
