Chapter #4

A public beach.

Living on the west coast certainly had its advantages, and one Yuki loved in particular was the ease of access to the beach. Yuki didn't even have to think on it when she'd originally heard that lifeguards were needed, and had an application filled out and turned in the next day. Yuki had always been a strong swimmer, and the idea of getting paid to keep an eye on the beach was irresistible. On top of that, her training had given her valuable skills that would look good on a resume; after all, it's nice knowing that someone in your workplace knows how to perform CPR.

It wasn't always easy to keep an eye on the entire beach, true, but Yuki thankfully wasn't alone. Several lifeguards were spread out at stations across the beach, each meant to look after a set stretch of the shoreline. As luck would have it, Yuki had wound up with the stretch nearest the pier, meaning that her area only overlapped a single other guard. The other end of the area, overshadowed by the pier as it was, wasn't meant for swimming and was deemed outside of the guards' normal duties.

Taking her seat on the elevated observation chair, Yuki scanned the area. It was a decently busy day, not surprising considering the summer heatwave. The people on the sand were more than likely perfectly safe, especially compared to the people out enjoying the water, so Yuki set her sights on watching the waves, making sure none of the people in her sight disappeared unexpectedly.

To be completely honest, Yuki's job wasn't particularly demanding most days. The general public seemed to keep themselves safe well enough, and it was admittedly somewhat rare for Yuki to have to rush out and help anybody out. Still, she wasted no time jumping into action when she saw that she was needed. As it was, Yuki noticed something: nobody was in obvious distress, but one person on the beach was trying to get her attention. Quickly climbing down, Yuki made her way towards-

You have the following choices:

1. A nervous young woman treading water.

*Noteb*
2. A teenage girl just under the pier.

*Noteb*
3. A small group of college-age kids.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
