Chapter #3

A Sinister Calling

    by: Unknown
"Ugh," I muttered to myself, hearing that high pitched tone. "Probably just some damn telemarketers."

But my nobler instincts took over, reminding me that it might have been an emergency. While I had been fooled by such thoughts before, being alone as I was meant that I had to step up my responsibilities... even if those responsibilities were as mundane as answering the phone.

I walked over to the kitchen phone, quickly checking the caller's ID. But rather than saying unknown, it said 'jammed'. Huh? I had never seen an error message like that before. My interest piqued, I picked up the receiver and gave a tentative, "Hello?"

The reply was a garbled chuckle. "Well, well. The man of the house is finally up. Enjoying your vacation?"

The voice was strangely distorted... deep and static-like, but unlike any normal person's voice would sound. In fact, I couldn't even tell if the speaker was male or female! It was as if the voice was being run through a filter of some kind.

"Uh, I guess so..." I replied, becoming more disturbed by the minute. "Who is this?"

The voice chuckled again, much more ominously than before. "Irrelevant. But I know a lot about you, little boy. In fact, I've decided to let you play a game with me."

A sinking feeling grew in my gut. Was this a prank of some kind? Some asshole from high school trying to rile me up?

"...a game?" I responded stupidly, unsure of where the conversation was going. Truth be told, I was still a little stunned.

"Yes," replied the sinister voice. "It's really fun. For one of us, any way..."

My hand was shaking, but I fought the fear as best I could. There was a moment of silence on the other end, and I weighed my options...

You have the following choices:

1. Let the voice continue

2. Angrily yell at the voice

*Noteb*
3. Slam down the receiver and call the police

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
