It is full of candies of bright colors and shapes. Inside the lid were big letters that read, "Wishing Candies," along with lots of little print that none bothered to read as they each took a candy and plopped it in their mouths. They each smiled and sighed at the taste as they gazed out across the field at the end of the street. A breeze blew smells of the farm that was just over the hill.
The Wilson's lived at the edge of the development. Beyond was a great field where they all could play in Mr. McHaper's pasture. He didn't mind as long as they didn't disturb the animals. Everyone was glad that he had refused to sell to the developers and enjoyed having open space in the sea of houses that had grown up over the years.
"Hmmmm. These are good. I wonder why they're called Wishing Candies?" Adam posed.
"Maybe because they're so good that you wish to have another ... and another," Tom chuckled.
Taking in the farm smell and looking out across the field wistfully, Ashley sighed, "I wish I had a pony."
"What is it with girls and ponies?" Adam said as he rolled his eyes, and Tom looked over at him with a smile ignoring the brief, soft sound behind him.
"POOF !"
"Quit making fun, dude," Tom told him before turning around. "It's OK, Ashley, he ... Ashley?" Tom looked around but didn't see her anywhere.
"Maybe she went to get a pony," Adam chuckled.
"Very funny. You probably just upset her, and she just disappeared," Tom told him as he looked around the porch. "I wish I knew where she went?"
"POOF !"
It was a good thing that the candy was very wet and sticky or it would have rolled down Adam's tongue and out his open mouth. His eyes went big, and the expression of shock stayed plastered on his face for almost a minute before he managed to force his lips together and turn to look at the box of candies. Underneath "Wishing Candies," he read all the fine print.
"These candies grant wishes when stated aloud with one in the mouth. Yes, they are magical, but they have some limitations. They cannot be used to harm anyone nor create a situation that would upset the balance of nature. Also, these grant wishes, not miracles. Be careful what you wish for. Candies and wishes are not guaranteed or warranted."
After a few more moments of careful thought, Adam swished the candy in his mouth and said out loud, "I guess I might as well join you. I wish I was with Tom and Ashley wherever they went."
