It was a quiet night for Amanda Jacobson. Her parents were out, and her sister was technically in charge. This hadn't really amounted to much apart from a quick dinner of macaroni and cheese and the being rushed off to her room upstairs before Kaylee's friends got here. Amanda wished she could hang out with them, but Kaylee got weirdly territorial around them and tended to act like Amanda got in the way. This doesn't stop Amanda from thinking they were totally awesome however.
Amanda's homework is done, and remains next to her backpack. She has taken to absentmindedly filling in a coloring book when the sound of breaking glass emanates from downstairs. Deciding that this warrants investigating, Amanda heads down the staircase to the living room, ignoring her sister's warnings to stay upstairs for the night.
When Amanda reaches the living room, she finds their father's card table set up at the center. Zoe, Tanya and Carmen are already sitting around it. Kaylee is at the entrance to the kitchen, sweeping the remains of a glass into a dustpan.
"What happened?" Amanda says, curious.
"Oh...hey, Mandy. It's nothing, okay? I just dropped a glass. You can go back upstairs." Kaylee says. She seems somewhat insistent about the last part.
"Hey, Mandy! What's up?" Zoe asks.
"Erm...not much. What are you guys doing down here?" Amanda asks.
"We're...uh...going to play a game so..." Kaylee begins.
"Oh! What game?" Amanda pipes up, excited.
"Strip poker!" Zoe says with a bit of a giggle. Kaylee shoots Zoe an alarmed look. Amanda frowns slightly. She's heard of poker. She learned to play when her dad taught her and her sister. But she doesn't know what the 'strip' part means.
"What's 'strip' poker?" Amanda asks innocently. Kaylee looks even more exasperated and Zoe giggles in full force.
"Well...do you know what poker is?" Zoe asks. Amanda nods cutely. "Well, strip poker is like regular poker, except whoever has the worst hand has to take off something they're wearing." Amanda feels her face go hot. A taking off clothes game sounded a little weird, but it also felt like something she shouldn't be doing, which of course made her immediately want to do it. One time, Amanda spied on her sister taking off her clothes in front of her computer. She wondered if this was something like that.
"I want to play!" Amanda blurts out.
"W-what!? No!" Kaylee says. "I'm not playing strip poker with my eight year old sister!"
"Aww, why not?" Zoe butts in. "I think it's kind of cute! I mean...we're just girls having a little fun anyway. It's mostly innocent. Mandy is awesome, I think she should totally get to play!" Amanda beams at Zoe.
"It is pretty cute, Kay. And besides, it's just us girls here. I mean, sure if we had some guys from school over it would be really weird, but with us I think it's fine. It'll be fun, even!" Carmen adds.
"If I'm being honest, I don't see playing strip poker with your little sister as that much weirder than playing strip poker with you. If they want her here, I'm cool with it." Tanya offerers.
"Fine," Kaylee says, defeated. "I guess my friends want to play strip poker with a 3rd grader. Weirdos." Kaylee sighs heavily. "Sit down, Mandy. They'll deal you in."
"Yay!" Amanda says as she skips over to the table and falls excitedly into her seat. Kaylee eventually joins the table too and the cards are passed out.
"You know how to play, Mandy?" Zoe asks.
"Uh huh! Daddy taught me and Kaylee together. I'm really good!" Amanda says.
"We'll see," Zoe says mischievously as Amanda picks up her cards.
