Her magic had created a living hunk of cake. It had a gaping chasm for a mouth and a facsimile of two arms and two legs. Miffie gaped at what her magic had created, barely dodging out of the way of a sugary grasp as she flew up into the air.
Charging her magic, Miffie sent a lightning ball straight into the cake golem's chest.
The only thing Miffie got from her attack was a gurgled roar.
More sugary arms grasped for her but she dodged again.
Think, Miffie, think!
Just then, she saw her mother's enchanted sword, a gift from a thankful village populace, and grabbed it, using her magic to grant herself the strength to lift it. Fire shot along the blade's length and Miffie charged with all her might.
Unfortunately, the blade passed right through without doing any serious damage and Miffie was soon caught, helpless in the sticky grip. She opened her mouth to chant a spell but a sugary sludge dripped down her throat, silencing the pixie.
So this is how it ends, Miffie thought. At least it was a tasty way to go.
Suddenly, the cake golem exploded in chunks of batter, chocolate, and frosting, the remains of her terrible creation now nothing but a large mess in the living room.
Her mother was behind the blast, soon cleansing the remains and sending them to the void.
Miffie passed out shortly after that.
When she came to, she found her mother hovering over her, a mug of sweet tea in her hand.
"I'm sorry," Miffie muttered. "I...I understand if you don't want to teach me magic anymore. I've proven myself unfit to be trusted with such power."
Kara's finger found her stomach then and stroked gently.
"Oh Miffie, I'm not going to stop teaching you. My magic is the greatest gift I could give you and I know you'll be a greater mage than I am one day."
Miffie gaped at that.
"It's true," her mother replied, chuckling a bit at the stupefied expression on her daughter's face. "But you do need to learn restraint and more importantly patience. So I think working with the baker will serve you well."
"But mother, she hates me!"
"She doesn't hate you dear. In fact, she offered to take you under her wing ever since the cupcake incident, figuring it would be a good punishment. I didn't agree then but now I'm starting to see the wisdom of her offer."
Miffie hung her head but nodded. "Alright, I'll work for the baker."
Kara smiled warmly and Miffie felt her guilt fade under it. She loved it when her mother was happy with her. It was almost as great as eating sweets.
"Wonderful! I'll contact her in the morning and we'll set up your hours."
