This choice: Alice goes back across the hall to check up on Hillary.  •  Go Back...
Chapter #39

Hillary's Heavy Heart

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
'Actually, I think I should probably go check up on' um, Megan.' Alice said apologetically, 'I mean, just to make sure she's alright.'

Ronnie would sigh deeply into her chest as she looked down in disappointment, her ever-present eyeroll hidden by her brunette bangs and the rim of her glasses. She didn't seem all too pleased with Alice's decision, a thought that terrified the poor girl immensely, but it didn't seem to be in her to outright hold her there against her will.

'I promise I'll be right back over?' Alice begged

There was another pause before Ronnie looked up, visibly displeased in Alice's choice of conduct. For whatever reason, Ronnie seemed adamant in keeping Alice away from 'Megan Mahoney'. Almost as adamant as keeping her well-fed. She could chalk it up to a simple blood feud between the two of them, but Alice got the sneaky suspicion that there was more to this than Hillary being something of a frequent rule-breaker.

Time would tell, she supposed.

'Alright, but you better be back soon.' Ronnie said in a pseudo-stern tone, 'I gotta know how much pizza to order.'

With that, it sounded like Alice had made the right decision. Pizza after an untold amount of calories and carbs already stewed away in her stomach didn't exactly sound like the best option. But surely Ronnie wouldn't force her to eat it if she didn't want it' right?

Alice heaved herself off of the couch and out the door'

'Megan?' she asked weakly from outside the apartment, 'It's me' It's me Alice. Are you okay?'

Thunderous footsteps would tell Alice that Hillary (or someone of equal or greater girth, for that matter, but Alice couldn't possibly think of who that could have been) was en route to answer her summons. After a few moments of awkward silence, the doorknob twisted as the crack widened to reveal Hillary Heart in all of her swollen superstardom.

She was dressed in pajamas. Flannel pants painted her thick legs red and yellow with distorted plaid patterns as the great vastness of her body struggled against containment. Her stomach sagged heavily out from underneath her white 'BA' t-shirt, which seemed apt to fit a girl some stone smaller than she was. Her heavy breasts stretched the sides of her shirt tight, and the sleeves cut deeply into her doughy arm fat. Hillary's round freckled face seemed to have reddened with the exertion it took to haul her heft over to the door and answer it herself, and her breathing was obviously belabored.

'What do you want?' she asked morosely, her American fa'ade slipping, 'Look, I'm sorry if I freaked you out but''

'Hillary, I was just worried.'

'Yeah well don't be.' The enormous ego bemoaned, 'Nobody else was.'

Alice nudged her head slightly to the left, ushering Hillary to move in kind in order to make room for Alice and her taut tummy. All she really wanted to do right now was sit down, it didn't matter what apartment she was in. All this walking and lifting and moving' it was really hard on a girl who'd just eaten more today than she probably had all week beforehand.

Hilary took one shaking step backward, and then another upon the realization that her belly was too big for the door to get by with such little space. The dorm was empty now, all the other girls having gone home seemingly after 'Megan's' breakdown behind closed doors. Alice would totter in uneasily before plopping down on the sofa a little too quickly'her poor stomach was so very upset'

'Grace and I had a fight.' Hillary said simply as she plopped down next to Alice, 'That's all. Nobody else heard because the music was so damn loud.'

'you and Grace?' Alice repeated sympathetically, 'What about?'

'Something' stupid.' Hillary turned away from Alice, 'She just' said something. I blew up at her, she blew up at me.'

'Oh.' The stuffed freshman retorted, 'So' are you two gonna be okay?'

'I dunno'' Hillary huffed, 'She's always had a rod up her ass, but she's been the closest thing I've had to a friend since I started at this bloody school. And that's saying something. Hell, she's probably the only girl on campus who's a bigger brat than I am' figuratively, of course.'

Silence fell upon the room as Hillary went quiet. Only both babes' belabored breathing could be heard in the otherwise deadly hush. Alice was never really good at these sorts of things, mostly because the environment in which she was raised didn't really respond well to emotional outbursts. Having such a tizzy back home would have earned you a stern talking to from Mother, not sympathy and support'

'Listen, you' you like me, right?' Hillary asked suddenly and sadly, 'Like, you wouldn't rather have another flatmate, would you?'

'Hillary, I''

'Because, I mean, I wouldn't blame you if you said you did. I mean first I lie about myself, then you find out that I'm some kind of celebrity, then I thrust all my craziness onto you' and then I don't see you all morning'and I do feel so terribly about that, I really do'and then all this happens' I've been a terrible friend''

'Hillary, you just have to stop lying!' Alice said exasperatedly, 'I would have been fine if you had told me about Grace and your other friends, but you didn't say''

'Those were Grace's friends, not mine.' Hillary interjected, 'I really' I really don't have any friends. Except for you. And Grace, I suppose. We have plenty of history, I can't really just cast her aside.'

'What did you two fight about?' Alice asked again, 'Really, Hillary, tell me?'

There was some hesitation on Hillary's part, Alice could tell. Anyone could have seen it, written so plainly between her chubby cheeks. That grimace that seemed to crawl out of a grave somewhere to mar an otherwise pretty (if not flabby) face.

'The reason I have a roommate this semester and not a single like all the other years, just like I told you, is because I wanted a roommate. Grace and I were talking about it before school let out. She and I would have one room together, while Katrina and Olivia roomed together next to us. But after I had a whole Summer to think about it, I realized how awful that would have been. I mean, you met her. She's a total brat, and there was no way I could trust her with me being' well, me. So at the last minute, I signed up for another dorm.'

'So you didn't want to live with her?' Alice asked softly, 'Did she bring it up or something?'

'Oh it's all she's talked about since yesterday.' Hillary groaned, 'That and how much she can't stand you.'

'Sh-She doesn't like me?'

'She doesn't like anybody.' Hillary added slyly, 'All she wants to do is sit on her ass and be pampered all day long' which admittedly doesn't sound a whole lot different from what I do, but she doesn't wear it nearly as well. If it hadn't been for her, I might have actually gone out and made more friends instead of just laying around being a bitch to everybody''

Hillary paused before letting out a little laugh.

'Can you imagine what would have happened if I didn't back out and request a new roommate? You'd need a forklift just to get me to and from classes!'

Alice laughed, against her better judgment, at the image of a two-ton Hillary Heart being lifted by a cartoonish piece of heavy lifting machinery. Of course the laughter upset her delicate stomach, so her karmatic punishment had already been well served.

'Oh, I'm just glad I smartened up.' Hillary said with a sigh, 'I can't imagine living with someone so negative all the time.'

'Yeah, I know a thing or two about that.' She hinted, images of her mother in less-than-flattering moments flashing before her eyes.

There was another pause, one that weighed lighter on everyone in the room, as Hillary draped one fleshy arm around Alice's shoulders and enveloped her in a hearty half-hug. It was sweet, and warm, even though Alice's elbow dug uncomfortably into Hillary's flabby gut.

'Thanks for listening.' Hillary said with a smile, 'You're a good friend.'

'You're welcome.' Alice smiled back

'

'So what were you doing with Ronnie, anyway?' Hillary asked incredulously, 'When you could have been hanging out with a perfectly pleasant Me all day?'

'She, um' sat with me at breakfast.' Alice admitted ashamedly, 'I was looking for you, but me and her sort of bonded''

'Oh I missed your first breakfast!!' Hillary cooed, suddenly noticing the swell to Alice's belly, 'Christ alive, how much did you eat, Ally?'

'A lot.' Alice groaned, 'I got a little carried away.'

'Obviously.' Hillary joked, 'But did you have a good breakfast?'

'It was good.' Alice said with a smile, 'I made a new friend and everything. She's over at Ronnie's right now. I should really get back over there' Rionnie's ordering a pizza''

'Oh, oh, take me with you!' Hillary asked excitedly

'But' But you and Ronnie''

'Will be perfectly fine, so long as there's pizza.' Hillary corrected gently, 'Cross my Hillary Heart and hope to die.'
