This choice: "I'm sorry!" Ronnie's offered to give Mel some cooking lessons for her class!  •  Go Back...
Chapter #50

Dumped for a Good Cook

'Oh geez, I can't.' Mel said with a little frown, 'I told Ronnie that I was having trouble in Ms. Walker's class and she offered to tutor me.'

Alice sighed, regretfully accepting of Melissa's refusal to run with her. Honestly, it wasn't like she didn't understand. Buttercombe Academy was a top-knotch prep school, and even All-A's Alice had some difficulty keeping up with the course. If Melissa was having some difficulties keeping her grades up, who was she to hold it against her?

'It's okay.' Alice sighed before flashing a hopeful little smile, 'Any chance we can go running before then? I'm free on Friday...'

Melissa's frown became more pronounced as Alice lead on. Her lips tugged at the side to form an almost comical expression. It was somewhat obvious that she didn't place the same weight in their running together as Alice did. But then again, why should she? Her mother probably wasn't going to serve her head on a platter if she turned into a butterball before Christmas'

'Sorry...' Melissa winced painfully, 'I promised Ronnie that I'd try out her entry for the Bake Sale's Cake Walk. She said she'd let me have the recipe after we were finished. Maybe we can do something on Thursday?'

'I can't, I have a big project due first thing in the morning on Friday.' Alice said disappointedly, 'That's why I was hoping we could do it this weekend...'

'Well what about Sunday?' Melissa asked, seemingly sincere in her attempts to pencil Alice into her schedule, 'I'm not doing anything Sunday.'

'Yeah but Ronnie always has us over for dinner on Sunday.' Alice said with a little pout, 'And I already told H'er, Megan that we'd have a spa day...'

'A spa day?' Melissa's eyebrow fish-hooked, 'I swear sometimes you're such a girl. You sure you can't blow her off?'

'No, I really can't.' Alice squeaked, 'I've been saying we'd do it for weeks now...'

'Well it's just the same.' Melissa added with a little sigh as she lifted her pizza back up to her mouth, 'I told Ronnie I'd meet her for breakfast in the cafeteria. She said she'd give me some pointers for my History class with Ms. Nelson. I was gonna blow her off but, I guess it's all the same. No fun running when I'm the only one out there, right?'

'R-Right...' Alice sighed brokenly.

Even though the two of them genuinely liked running with one another, it was hard to believe that suddenly everything had become so convoluted. She supposed, as the semester rolled on, it would just be like that. Still, running had helped her keep her weight in check and allow her appetite to run a little bit more freely without worry.

Maybe with a little less intake, she wouldn't have to worry as much' but that was going to be hard'

'Hey, we'll work something out.' Melissa said, her attitude shifting from guilty to optimistic, 'Tell you what, we'll try to work something out next week!'

'Alright...' Alice said before cracking a little smile, 'Are you going to finish that pizza?'
