A short, inquisitive race of humanoids that lives around the world in isolated valleys, calderas, deep woods, or cavern systems--anywhere they can build their communities while remaining safe from the larger and more dangerous races. Their word from themselves is Gnomae, but they are more frequently known as bottle gnomes, a name given to them by human alchemists due to their curious metabolic traits. The bodies of gnomes are hypersensitive to the magical properties of the natural world, and will often draw out and express hidden alchemical properties in their food. Because of this, gnomes tend to express strange characteristics as they age, everything from growing antlers or tails to changing their color or size dramatically to acquiring bizarre powers and abilities.
Gnomes are often sought by those who seek to exploit this trait, stuffing them full of the proper ingredients and then extracting the result potion as it's produced. Female gnomes are preferred for this purpose, as they can be easily milked to produce a high-quality, nearly pure extract. Due to a pronounced gluttonous streak, gnomes may voluntarily participate in this endeavor if the ingredients are tasty.
Eating large quantities of ordinary potatoes will render a bottle gnome highly explosive; this is sometimes used in war. Understandably, there are few volunteers for this service.
