This choice: "Martha lost her boy....  •  Go Back...
Chapter #3

"Martha lost her boy....

    by: Unknown
"Only five years old the boy was. Terrible thing when that happened, we were very fond of him."

"What caused the death?" You ask him.

He shrugs a bit, as he looks in the fire. "We don't have a doctor around here, only my wife knows a bit of illnesses. The boy had fever and shriveled all the time. It was a mercy when he died."

"So what happened next?" You ask irritated.

"Martha, you have to understand, was always a bit peculiar. Some of us weren't too sad to see her gone. She moved to the city for a few years and when she came back she had the boy with her. She wouldn't talk about the father. That boy was her every thing."

You are about to make a comment again, when the elder holds up his hand. "I know, I know you want to know what this has to do with anything. I'll tell you. It's Martha you see. When the boy died she had quite a shock. When we hadn't seen Martha and the boy for a couple of days we went inside their cottage. Inside the boy lied on his bed peaceful and Martha was sitting on a chair just staring at the boy. Like she was someplace far away." The elder shrivels. "After that we thought things would go back to normal, but..."

"It just sounds like a mother who has lost her child, cases like that are similar.

"It's not!" The elder shouts pushing his cane into the ground. Realizing what he had done, the fire in his eyes wither down. "I'm sorry, this is just very hard for me. Things have changed around here. Martha isn't herself anymore."

"What kind of behavior?" You ask.

"At first she wouldn't speak with us anymore, she kept to herself. Only time she left her cottage was in the middle of the night. A few of the farm boys have seen her leave. They even heard her cackling as she disappeared into the forest."

"And now?"

"Now she acts perfectly normal. She comes out of her cottage, visits the market stalls, even joining the women gossiping."

"That doesn't sounds suspicious to me, it sounds like she has picked up her normal life."

"Sir, she has never been like that. She was always the odd one." The elder grabs you by your shoulder. "Please just go and talk to her. Maybe you can see what is wrong with her."

You pull away the hand from you. "If that's what you're asking fine, but you know what the fine is for calling us without an emergency." You stand up as to prepare to leave.

The elder nods as he stands up as well. He explains to you where you can find the cottage of Martha. "I have good faith in you, and please try to help my daughter."

You nod as you leave the elder's house. Outside you stare at the dark sky. Some mission this turns out to be, most likely there was nothing and the elder had to pay the fine. But something makes you curious to what has happened.

You could go to Martha's cottage, try and speak to her if she's still up. On the other hand you could talk with some of the villagers, maybe they have more information for you.

You have the following choices:

1. Visit Martha in her cottage.

*Noteb*
2. Talk with some of the villagers.

*Noteb*
3. Something has come to you.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
