There was a scraping, stony rasp as the heavy statue swung aside. Stepping inside, the darkness was oppressive. "Lumos."... But, his wand remained stubbornly unlit. Afraid to step into the darkness, and perhaps off a ledge, he tried again.
Lumos, he rasped.
A frown creased his forehead, as he realised he'd tried parseltongue. Instead, a torch burst into life in a sconce on the wall. Flames flickering into life from the gaping mouth of a serpent. The light failed to reach the ceiling. As Harry went toward the torch, another burst into life, then another, and another, and another.
Soon a round chamber was illuminated. The walls were untouched, rough and only the even-ness of the floor betrayed any attempt to make it more than blank stone.
The room was empty... apart from some covered statue in the middle of the room. Unsure it was wise, he headed inside, determined to see what was beneath the sheet. It hung too loosely to give any hint about what lay beneath. Harry knew he should tell his friends before proceeding, but his curiosity was too strong. He couldn't tell Hermione and Ron he'd found a deeper hidden chamber, and not have those sheets betray the fear that gave him pause.
His every step afraid he'd trigger some trap, and die by some hidden weapon. Nevertheless he made it to the centre of the room. With a swift tug he pulled aside the sheet to reveal a mirror. It was then he spotted there were three more shapes hidden by protective sheets. Probably mirrors too, if Harry had to guess.
The detritus of starved spiders, and their empty webs were all that drifted down, as Harry revealed the last mirror. They were arranged into a square, each facing outwards, and in ornate frames. It was the frames that told him, these were more than simple mirrors. The carving around the frame telling something of their secrets.
