Chapter #5

A Smartphone

You scoffed at the old, obscure looking consoles on display. No doubt rip-offs of more popular systems. In fact, you were about to push the musty cardboard box aside when the reflection of some sunlight caught your eye. Under a blue cartridge with some sort of Japanese text on it was the black, glossy screen of a smart phone. Confusedly, you picked it up, out of the box.

The phone was rather nondescript. It wasn't an iPhone, but it wasn't a Samsung or Droid phone either. In fact, the only mark of branding you could find was on it's light blue back where an engraved "TP" could be seen. Smirking at the applicable bathroom humor, you looked around to see if anyone nearby was looking for the phone. It clearly didn't belong with the videogame consoles, so you had to find its owner.

Walking back to the front of the sale with the phone in hand, you approached the elderly lady who was standing behind the makeshift counter. "Excuse me, miss," you begin, "but I think someone left their phone over by the videogame consoles." With that, you hold the phone out so that the woman could get a good look.

"Oh, that's actually merchandise!" the lady smiled, her eyes crinkling on the edges, "Though you're right, it shouldn't have gotten mixed in with those games."

"Oh," you respond a bit dumbly, "Uh, how much is it, I guess?" You already had a functional phone, but this one seemed... different for whatever reason. Besides, if it was cheap, and you didn't like it, you could give it to your friend, Austin, since it was his birthday next month.

"Well," the woman started, "Normally I'd charge a lot for this phone as it can be a bit... temperamental, but you've proven yourself to be honest enough. Does two dollars sound agreeable to you?"

Unsure of why something being temperamental could add to its price, you still weren't one to pass up a deal. "Sounds good to me!" You handed your money off and wandered away, unaware of the knowing smile the old woman gave as you left.

Shortly thereafter, your mother had decided she had enough and called you over to go home. You had skimmed some of the other sections briefly without finding anything, so you just followed her back to the car.

"Did you find anything, sweetie?" your mother asked as you buckled in.

"Yea, I found a weird phone. I'm not sure if it works though, since there doesn't seem to be a place to charge it from," you responded.

You saw your mom's forehead furrow in the mirror as she adjusted it. "Well I hope you didn't pay much for it, then."

"Nah, I figured it was a gag gift anyways."

"Alrighty, dear. Can you make sure your sister is buckled in, please?"

Once you got back home, you grabbed some bread from the cupboard and made yourself a sandwich. Munching on a combination of meat and lettuce, you took the phone out of your pocket to examine. You still hadn't found an on button yet, which was kind of confusing.

"Johnny, I'm taking Briana back out for icecream since she was so well behaved at the garage sale. Do you want me to get you anything?" your mother called from the front door.

"Chocolate, please!" you called back with a mouthful of sandwich.

"Got it! See you in a little while, dear!" your mom said as she closed the door.

Brushing the remaining crumbs of your sandwich from your face with the back of your hand, you accidentally loosen your grip on the phone, and it dropped to the floor with a sickening cracking sound.

"SHIT!" you swore. You quickly retrieved the phone and checked the screen. There were no cracks in it, so you turned it over. Tracing the "TP" on the back for scratches caused you to accidentally push the letters down which clicked like a button. That caused the screen to suddenly spring to life, nearly making you drop the phone again. "What a crappy design for an on button," you mutter.

Turning over the phone again revealed a rather plain interface. The background was a simple white color with small black text in the center that read, "TransPhone." The odd name of the brand is overshadowed by the odd names of the apps. There are only two that you can see: PictureSwap and BodyPhotoShop.

Which app do you try out?

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. PictureSwap

2. BodyPhotoShop

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
