Chapter #14

Back on the ship (END OF WEEK 1)

    by: a Author IconMail Icon
Gamora, Peter, and Drax made it back on the Benatar before Rocket and Groot, and they were able to collect their bearings before the two arrived. They each caught their breath, Gamora especially, as she sucked in the cool air of the ship. Mantis watched on, a confused look on her face.

Moments later, Groot scrambled onto the ship. His eyes were wide.

"Groot! Are you alright? Where's Rocket?" Gamora asked.

"I am Groot..." he replied, a sad tone in his voice.

"Oh, wait. Only Rocket can understand what he's saying," she said.

"That was pointless," Drax added.

Quill stepped up and put a hand on Groot's shoulder. "Hang on, hang on! I've been paying attention to their conversations. I think I've got a pretty good idea of what he's saying. Come on, bud. What happened?

"I am Groot..."

Peter stepped back, horrified. "Oh my god! He didn't make it?"

Groot raised an eyebrow. "I am Groot?"

"That's terrible. I'm sorry you had to see that, little guy!"

Groot just shook his head.

"Okay, it's obvious that Peter's translating skills are not very good. Let's just wait and see if Rocket shows," Gamora suggested.

As if on cue, there was the sound of patters ambling up the ramp. It was Rocket, soaking wet. His fur dripped water onto the ship's floor.

"You. Jerk!" Rocket yelled.

"Who is the jerk?" Drax asked.

"All of yas! Except for Mantis, I guess. First, let's start with the distraction team, shall we? How the hell did you let that many guards slip by? There were so many riches in that vault! Second, thank you Groot for abandoning me on the roof! I had to jump from there to the fountain in order to dodge all the bullets flyin' at me. Groot's just a kid, so I can forgive that. But you three? Oh, boy, if you think I'm gonna hold back from tearing' you a new one..."

"It was Gamora's fault!" Drax exclaimed.

Gamora gritted her teeth. "Me? You were the one who rushed ahead before we could set up a plan!"

"And you let the guards slip by, giving Rocket less time!" he fired back.

Gamora sighed and looked at Quill. "Peter, back me up here!"

"I mean...you did say you were having a bad day when that guard took you by surprise, but I think we all--" Quill started, before being interrupted by Rocket.

"Oh, so it was her fault, huh? I shoulda known..."

Peter stepped between Rocket and Gamora as he approached her. "Wait a minute, Rocket. Drax did jump the gun early, and I missed some shots too. We all screwed up."

Rocket waved him off. "Nah, nah. I know you gotta stick up for her, but she's the one that's taking the blame for this. If she didn't let them get past her, we woulda been walking out rich!"

"I am not taking the blame for this! We all could have done better, so the brunt of the failure shouldn't just fall on one person!" Gamora said.

"You know, if Quill was right, and you're off your game, then maybe it would be best if you sat out the next phase of this job. The prison break's the most dangerous part, anyways," Rocket said.

Gamora scoffed. "Is that so? Well, maybe I will!"

She stormed off and headed to her room, the slamming of her door heard from the mess hall.

"She's been very angry lately," Mantis noted with a frown.

Inside her room, Gamora threw herself on the bed and stared at the ceiling. A few seconds later, there was a knock at the door.

"If that's Rocket, I'm going to kill you," she promised.

"No, it's...it's me," Peter said on the other side of the door.

"Fine," Gamora huffed.

Peter opened the door and stood in the doorway.

"I'm sorry that that just happened. But you know how Rocket is. Always has to put the blame on someone. He...he has a point, you know. You do seem off. Maybe taking some time off will do you some good," he suggested.

"Yeah. Maybe you're right. Peter?" she asked as he was about to head back out.

"What's up?" he asked.

"Thanks for checking up on me," Gamora said.

Quill smiled and nodded, then returned to the mess hall. Gamora sat in bed a little while longer, her hands eventually finding her bloated middle.

Hopefully you'll go away soon... she thought.
