Sir Garrett sat down at on a log near the fire enjoying the warmth of the fire and the aromas arising from the stew. He decided it was best to accept the woman’s kindness especially because enjoying a warm meal while you were traveling without all the work involved in it was always an easy decision. The paladin lifted the spoon to his mouth and took a large swallow and was surprised by the wonderful flavor he encountered.
It was a hearty vegetable stew with my fine herbs for wonderful flavors. Sir Garrett wondered if the vegetables were freshly picked, and decided he would ask the woman in a minute, but for the moment he was enjoying the crackle of the fire and the feeling of a full stomach. His eyes felt heavy as the heat from the fire seemed to call him to slumber but he fought against it because it would be rude to pass out before thanking his host properly.
“You have great stamina to have remained awake for this long young warrior,” a sinister look began to appear on the face of the woman. “I am afraid it will do you no good, because you have already had too much of my magical stew. Do not worry, because I have no intention of killing you. You have too much value, but you are too dangerous as you are currently.”
Rage filled the paladin at the trick. He wasn’t angry with himself but with her for the betrayal of the trust he placed in her. How many others had fallen for this trap? How many more would fall into it if he didn’t stop this evil magic user? Sir Garrett stumbled to his feet and drew his blade as he moved towards the woman.
Fear took hold of her face as she realized she was no longer in control of the situation. Her body started to make the motions to run from the enraged warrior before her, but the paladin allowed gravity to speed his movements and fell forward stabbing the woman in the foot ending thoughts of escape as the pain took hold of her mind.
“Please, I can give you an antidote to the stews effects,” the woman pleaded.
Sir Garrett would have liked to take her at her word but she had already proven to be untrustworthy, and slumber was beginning to take hold of his mind despite his best efforts. He focused himself for what he felt he must do and a swift and powerful motion he pulled the sword from her foot and severed his enemies head from her shoulder, and collapsed next to her body wondering what other effects the stew would have upon his body by the time he woke up, if there were any.
The paladin woke to the feeling of his horse nudging him. He checked himself but didn’t feel any different. Had the corpse on ground been lying when she said he would be transformed or was it just delayed? It could be she had planned to add something while he slept that would have caused the transformation. The question was if he should search the magic user’s home for an antidote just in case though he would be risking whatever traps she had set in her home, or risk himself being transformed down his journey at who knows what point and facing what dangers. It was a tough decision and not one he was looking forward to making though it must be done soon, because he had a quest to finish for the King, so he might win the hand of the Princess he loved in marriage.
