Chapter #5

The Power of Words.

The apparent leader of the other men was unperturbed by Sir Garret's threat of violence and simply raised his right hand, while his left rest passively against his hip.

"There's no need for violence, my friend" The man spoke in an odd tone, something that seemed off-kilter and strangely pitched for a man of that size. But then again, that was something to be expected, right? Sir Garret suddenly realized he was being far, far too foolish, especially against a man he realized meant him no harm and was being particularly friendly and welcoming. The knight blinked a few times before sliding his sword back into it's scabbard and pulled himself out of his combat stance.

"There, was that so hard?" The man's voice was normal again as he lowered his hand.

"My apologies, friend" Garret said, and he truly meant it, "My training and the urgency of my quest have left me on edge. I respect your own duties, but I simply must get through!"

The man frowned for a moment and Garret felt the tension rise once more, before his potential foe smiled and waved his hands to either side of him, his men immediately releasing their grips on their own swords and backing away.

"Well then, if a knight requests it, so shall it be done! Take heed, however, the path is quite treacherous. Allow me to escort you through the sections of trail we have already cleared out." The man raised his hand again. "My I have your name, friend?"

The man's invitation seemed quite civil, and Garret felt no ill-intent behind the words. After all, this man had done nothing to present himself as anything other than friendly. Sir Garret nodded and made his way across the short distance separating him from the group of men, reaching them in moments and extending his armored hand towards the speaker. "My name is Sir Garret, might I have yours?"

The man's hand remained raised as he brought his other up to shake Garret's hand, "You don't need me to tell you my name, we've been friends for years! Now come, let us journey together, and let me keep you safe before that fool head of yours gets you into trouble" Again the man's voice shifted and wavered in tone and pitch.

Sir Garret blinked a few more times before he felt himself nodding. Of course, this man was a dear friend of his from the heady days of youth, when they'd been but boys in the training yard! A name floated out of the sudden fog that he felt on his mind, Longhack. It was a name the man had earned from the other boys during sword training, Longhack had, on his first try, cut a training dummy in two with a longsword. Oh, Garret felt like such an idiot for forgetting!

Maybe it was just the altitude and the weather, but Garret, even in the company of his old friend, couldn't help feeling overly befuddled at the current chain of events, like the fog in his mind was growing denser with each passing moment. It would be an ill-fitting end to his story if he should take a stray step and end up falling to his death. He nodded to Longhack.

"Of course, old friend, lead the way. I certainly do not want to take a accidental fall on your equipment"
