For a long moment the horse just stands there studying you. Meanwhile you shift into a sitting position on the couch. The couch is old but still usable. There's only minor moth-eaten damage on the edges but no more than that. One would expect a couch that's been sitting in a run-down ranch house would be threadbare and unable to support the weight of a grown adult. The couch is one of those nice wide ones.
After a minute went by the horse falls on all four feet as if it has been unable to maintain standing on its hind feet. The horse snorts and wanders over to the light switch. You just watch as the horse walks to the wall and flips the switch rather awkwardly with its head. Instantly three of the four lamps in the room turn on flooding the room with light.
The lamps are long pole lamps which are connected to the same power strip. Each of the lamps have long power cords.
The horse turns to face you. As the horse turns you notice the horse is a mare.
The mare is spotted with white, brown and chestnut skin. The mare is a big one. Must be a Clydesdale.
"Well you're a smart one to turn on the lights" you say.
The mare blinks once. "You look familiar for some reason"
The mare's voice is deep and rich.
"You can talk? !" you ask, standing from the couch.
"Of course I can talk" said the mare. "All horses can talk on this ranch. I thought Hazel would've told you before she died"
Hazel was your great grandmother who had died of a stroke two years ago. She willed the ranch to you because you and her were close. You visited the ranch when you were five years old but you hardly remember the visit other than the fact that you did visit. Hazel moved out of the ranch for health reasons which caused the ranch to be in such disrepair. You decided to move into the ranch when you were evicted from your apartment building for missing a rent payment.
"She neglected to mention that little tidbit" you deadpan. And then you add, "How did you know I was related to Hazel?"
The mare laughs. "You smell like her"
"And how did you enter the house?" you ask.
"It helps that the backdoor has no doorknob" said the mare slyly.
That's when you recall seeing the fact that the backdoor had no doorknob. How else would the mare get into the house by turning a doorknob when she doesn't have a thumb?
"How much do you know about this ranch?" asked the mare.
"Just that the ranch is a horse ranch" you say. "Other than that, I know very little. I didn't come here to raise horses. I came here because I had no other place to go after being evicted from my apartment for not paying the rent on time. If that old bat would've waited for one more day I would've paid her"
The mare tilts her head. It seems to you that the mare is thinking things over.
"So....how many horses are on this ranch?" you ask sounding causal .
"Twenty" said the mare. "All mares, no stallions"
"All mares?" you ask perplexed. The mare nods.
"Do you have a name?"
" Rita" said the mare.
