A chill salty breeze rustled Gabe's fur as he took a hearty bite out of a fresh apple in his hand. Little by little, his bags were carried off of the small barely sea worthy vessel docked at port. He watched bemused as his brother stumbled with a heavy bag of "tools" from the boat onto the dock.
"Hey would it kill you to help?" said Jim.
"I paid for the boat you carry the luggage." Gabriel replied and took another bite from his apple.
"Come on give me a break here, most of this is your junk anyways."
"That so called junk is our livelihood, I think you should pay it a little respect."
Jim rolled his eyes and lugged the bags along. "How about you, I don't know, get a job?"
The two brothers began to walk to the nearest inn as the sun slowly began to settle into the horizon. Gabriel slid his hands into his pockets and watched the lazy town settle. It seemed rather ordinary, unsettlingly ordinary.
"If this works we won't ever need to worry about anything ever again."
"And you know this how?"
"I just do, eavesdropping is one of my special skills." Gabriel took a few more bites of his apple and discarded the spent core.
"What if this goes wrong?" Jim frowned concerned. "What if you end up in jail, or worse, dead."
"Oh please you think I'm going to screw up the biggest job of a lifetime? I've researched the town from top to bottom, all possible escapes, all possible places to hide. And if it makes you feel better there's people here that owe me favors. I always make sure somebody somewhere owes me a favor."
"If you say so."
"I say so."
Jim kept his mouth shut the rest of the way, knowing inside that the conversation was going nowhere fast. Lanterns were lit outside homes as the town eased into a lazy calm. Just outside of the Inn they could hear the idle chatter of travelers lodging there for the night. Gabriel sifted inside his homely looking satchel for a few gold coins and ventured inside.
The inn was empty for the most part, most people there were unassuming and engaged in esoteric conversations together. This worried Gabriel slightly.
"Gabe, I don't mean to rain on any parades, but for a town rumored to have that treasure you're looking for, it doesn't seem people are clamoring to get here." Jim whispered.
"Maybe we beat the crowd here."
He hoped they had only beaten the crowd. Gabriel stepped up to the bar and set his coins out in front of him. The bartender instantly took notice and quickly went to greet his new customers.
"How may I help you?"
"Just need a room for a few nights."
"Of course, might I interest you in buying some food or drinks?"
"I'm good." The vulpine nodded.
"How about your friend here?" The bartender gestured to Jim. "He want anything?"
Jim licked his lips and looked at Gabe. "If you don't mind Gabe I think I'll hang out here."
Gabriel smirked a little and grabbed his bags. "Well alright I'll just be in the room. Enjoy."
He quickly lugged his supplies upstairs and left his brother to keep all of the attention. Hopefully he wouldn't have too much to drink and blow his friendly facade. Quietly he searched his bags for a hood and several tools. Lock picks, multi-purpose knives, smoke bombs, and various other tools of the trade.
