"Okay, test number two!" your mother declares, before setting you back down on the chair. Your fabric body crumples on itself, an uncomfortable sensation. Seeing the empty other chair, you realise your actual body is nowhere to be seen. You really hope Mom just moved it somewhere.
She flips a switch (or that's what it sounds like - you can't move your vision to see up there), and you feel a jolt of electricity. Up to this point, you're not sure you were actually feeling anything - it might just be all in your head (so to speak) - but you definitely felt that. Mom picks you up again.
"Argh, what now?" you think. To your surprise, your mom's face lights up in response.
"Aha! I can hear you now! Hi, Austin!" she says in that aggravatingly cheerful manner of hers.
"Mom! This is not cool! Knock it off and change me back!" you think at her.
"Oh, come on! Don't you realise how amazing this is!?" she says. "You're defying all sorts of established science right now! You're an ordinary piece of clothing, but you're alive. You don't have a brain, but you're thinking. You don't have eyes or ears, but you can see and hear me!"
She has a point. This is leagues above all the dumb stuff she's done in the past. She might just be able to get some recognition for this.
But you're not about to admit that.
"Yeah, great," you instead reply. "I'd really like those things back now, though."
"Don't be such a spoilsport! We're just getting started! Now, what should I try next, hm?"
You don't bother to reply, knowing she wouldn't listen.
