So how smart does she make her companion?

A companion that is smart enough to formulate creative ideas and think for itself, it can act independently and perform complex tasks without it's master being there to help, as well as thinking of the consequences of it's actions and how to achieve certain goals.

A seemingly mindless companion that just does what the owner wants very literally making it prone to backfiring unintentionally.
