It was a fairly ordinary day for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. They had been ordered by Starfleet to investigate an anomaly in the Horsehead Nebula, and they were en route to the star now.
Most of the senior staff was on the bridge. Captain James Kirk was in his chair, Commander Spock was standing at the Science Station, Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu was positioned at the helm, Ensign Pavel Chekov was seated next to him at navigation, Lieutenant Nyota Uhura was working at the Communications Array, and Yeoman Janice Rand was standing behind Captain Kirk, awaiting commands from him.
Nothing much had happened since they had received their assignment; they were expecting this to be a fairly ordinary day. However, Uhura and Rand were eagerly looking forward to something else.
Before long, the speaker on the bridge came on and Nurse Christine Chapel's voice was heard: "Lieutenant Uhura, Yeoman Rand, please report to sickbay for a routine checkup."
That was what the two women had been waiting for. Both of them casually moved away from their posts and proceeded to the turbolift. Lieutenant Hadley took over for Uhura at comm. When the turbolift doors opened, the women entered it and waited for it to close.
Once it started moving, they dropped their emotionless display, looked at each other, and grinned.
"You think she finally got it?" asked Uhura.
"Considering that we already had our routine checkup last week, I'm certain of it," replied Rand.
A few minutes later, the two women in red had arrived in Sickbay. As usual, Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy and his assistant Nurse Christine Chapel were there. However, Commander Montgomery Scott and a number of his crew in the engineering department were there as well. A conduit had ruptured down in the engine room, injuring several of them. Scott had not been hurt in the rupture; he was simply there to assure himself of the well-being of his men.
Nurse Chapel noticed Uhura and Rand entering the room. Once they did, she told McCoy "Doctor, I would like to give Yeoman Rand and Lieutenant Uhura their health exams now."
"That might be difficult right now, Christine," Dr. McCoy told his assistant, "Sickbay's already crowded enough as it is."
"In that case, do you suppose I could just give them their checkups in my quarters?" Chapel suggested.
"Sure, that's acceptable," McCoy responded.
Chapel grinned and said "Thank you, sir. I just need to get my equipment and then we'll be out of your hair."
She went into her office, retrieved a large black box, and then told the other two women "Come with me, please."
The three ladies left Sickbay and headed towards Chapel's quarters. Once they arrived there, Chapel instructed the computer to seal off the door. Then she placed the black box on a counter, opened it, and removed two packages of adult diapers; one for cloth, one for disposable.
She smiled, turned to her friends - who were also smiling - and asked them "Alright, dears; who wants to be first?" indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
