The extra weight wasn't enough for James to notice however, after having a morning bath he went into his wardrobe where his valets were waiting to dress him. It was almost certain that the two young boys had noticed, Lord Richard and Lord Harry, the two younger sons of the Duke of Balfour, had served as James' pages for almost 4 years in which time they had seen James shirtless on a regular basis... more so than most people. When Lord Harry reached 17 Mary agreed to their father the Duke that both him and his 16 year old brother would take on further duties as the Crown Princes valets. Thus for four months they had been dressing James, seeing his naked body up close everyday, often several times each day. Though young, they were tactful. If they did notice that James had gained weight they didn't say anything, neither did they indicate that they noticed, as was expected of servants, however high born.
They dressed him extravagantly as always, donning him in scarlet stockings, a white silk shirt and a intricately embroidered jerkin. James had been called to court by the Queen herself, the privy council and all the nobles in the city were to be there. It was sure to be an important and interesting affair.
