Today was the first day of summer, well officially according to the calender atleast; it had been scorching for weeks now. Right across the coast the commoners of Castile filled the beaches, here in Royal Palace at Jecca almost everything took place in the gardens of Royal Palace, court, parties, nobles pleasure time.
Ferdinand couldn't help feeling slightly sorry for the women; they still wore their enormous and extravagant dresses, though summer-dress was made of lighter fabrics, there were no allowances made for their comfort. As in the other two great Kingdoms to the north, women had to dress respectfully. Men on the other hand were able to wear as little - with the exception of underpants - as they wanted, obviously their was a dress code at important court functions. Ferdinand had noticed that this dress-freedom, widely known as the summer liberty, was really only embraced by the young, presumably due to most nobleman wishing to always to dress to impress.
The summer liberty meant the almost inclusive and carefully observed tradition of fasting was required, which young men and boys followed in the three months preceding the summer. This because of the widespread feasting that happened thorough out the winter season. For some this tradition of fasting was more difficult and strict than for others, it usually depended on just how much was eaten during the winter season. It was seen to be important that young men looked healthy and fit, especially if they dressed liberally in summer. This covered young boys as well, Ferdinand had followed this tradition for 4 years now, ever since he was 7, despite the fact that he hadn't really dressed that casually until he was 9. As with last year, he would wear only his underwear for most of the summer season. The fasting tradition was more important for him this year as he had eaten far more in the previous winter than the one last year, which had resulted in him gaining over 8 pounds, double last year's.
Ferdinand remembered how displeased his governess had been, at the time he hadn't cared. That winter had been fantastic, just relaxing and almost gorging himself on the massive variety of delicious foods. Though he had felt displeasure and slight embarrassed at the fact that Jose and Carlos had only gained only 5 pounds between them throughout feast season.
