Chapter #4

A new beginning for six convicts.

    by: seawolf147 Author IconMail Icon
The escaped convicts hid in the shadows of the large mansion in the wood, their breath filled the air around them as the snow on the ground attacked their feet. They waited, listening to the scratching of metal at the Latino man tried to jimmy the door to the basement open. None of them said a word, their minds too cold and tired to form coherent thought, as the sun rose on a another beautiful crisp early December day.
A small history lesson: The world in which the convicts lived in at a glance looked very similar to ours but their world had taken a much darker path than our own. In the early sixties the hippie movement started to rise, just like in our world, but the older generation saw the hippie as degenerates and perverts attempting to subvert the order of things. Out of fear and hate, the government increased all sentences for any kind of law broken to be a minimum of twenty years imprisonment. Of course there were riots, almost a revolution, but the older ways didn’t mind playing dirty to win.

The justice system quickly became a huge financial burden to the state but the public kept on finding more people to throw in jail. People with mental health problem, minorities, cripples, perverts, free thinkers, gays and lesbian, all found themselves in prison with rapists and murders. At the turn of the 21st century America was near collapse, even with forced labour, the country had run out of money, the soviets were going to win, and then someone came up with a solution, a “Final solution”. A solution that would solve the problem of so many old people trapped in the system, refusing to do their patriotic duty and die once they could not work any longer.

The convicts currently trying to break in to the house had been on a prison bus, with more people, heading to a solution facility when the bus unexpectedly crashed on the snow free road. As the last of the suns light disappeared, the thirty odd prisoners quickly fled in all directions into the snow covered woods. The small group of prisoners had accidentally found each other in the dark and blindly walked for miles all night till finding salivation, in the form of a house verging on a palace.

Dr. Ray Willis looked to be most out of place among the criminals. A man in his sixties, with a bookish look about him, his face normally appeared calm but the over prisoners quickly learn that there was a sea of anger beneath the surface of his cool exterior. Nobody knew that got the Doc thrown in the slammer, but nobody dared ask. The next person to stand out was Rosemary Tate, a woman of indeterminate age, between sixty and thousand would be a good guess. She was a tough old bird, women had to be to survive in the mix gendered jails and Rosemary certainly was tough, a kind little lady to people she liked but a sawn of hell to the people who crossed her. She’d ended up in jail because she’d killed her husband, in prison something quickly broke inside of her and she’d quickly moved from a shy woman to the queen of the women’s area in a matter of two years. She’d maintained a harem of the pettiest women, all servicing her desires, women who refused her will stayed alive, but they certainly weren’t petty no more.

The biggest person of the group was Vin. There wasn’t much to say about Vin, he was a very large black man with a simple mind, he didn’t say anything and he did what was told. He had been accused of raping someone, but it never went to trial instead he was put in jail straight away, it was high unlikely simple Vin could do such a thing he was just a another victim of the evil system. Vin was looked after by Max Price, another black man of small stature, Vin and Max look out for one another, Vin had the muscle and Max the brains, not that Max was smart if anything he could probably be outwitted by an ant.

The Latino man trying to silently open the door was Gustavo “Gus” Cruz. Gus was your average wheeler dealer, good at breaking into places, but since he was in prison it was obvious not so great at getting out of them. The last man stood apart from the others, from the tattoos on body it was clear he was a white supremacist who would normally be welcome in current society but he like the rest of them ended up on the bus heading off to die. He said his name Jack and that been all he ever said while in prison, even when beaten by the inmates and the jailers.
There was a soft click and the door opened, the inmates rushed in to the warmth of the basement and found what appeared to be a lab. They silently moved around the lab checking there was no one about, their teeth chattering all the time, they gathered at the warmest spot of the lab and tried to rub their limbs back to life hoping they had not got frostbite. They soon fell asleep out of sheer exhaustion, but they were soon woken by the Doc he’d found a wonderful invention that was certain to change all their lives. Something the man of the house had been working on before going away on business, something that he had stupidly left instructions for, a crash and a simple black pen had improved the lives of six people a lot. As the sun rose over the tree tops it was most certainly going to be an interesting Christmas everyone in the house.
