Chapter #2Campus Of Shadows by: Unknown Campus was a study in contrasts: old and new, urban and rural, old and young. The buildings had been constructed on the outskirts of town a hundred years ago when land was cheap in the wake of the Big Drought and the city had been slow to expand to catch it. Some buildings, though, were newer: tall and glass-clad, shining in the sun. Others were old and decrepit, looking as if a stiff breeze across the plains or through the neighboring Malodov Wood, would knock them over. The staff tended towards the elderly, with a decent number of younger exceptions, along with the student body.
Foxes, wolves, coyotes, and hyenas mingled with horses, zebras, donkeys, and unicorns. The occasional draconic exchange student flew in for a landing on the broad, sculpted lawns while mixed-race residents such as chimera or gryphons wandered the tree-lined paths.
An hour's drive from downtown, a small village had grown up between the dorms featuring all the needs students might have: a grocery, a pharmacy, restaurants, bars, and three book stores filled the area.
Few watched the shadows, however.
The shadows moved.
They weren't sinister nor, when noticed, did they seem ominous. Rather, they were like reflections of some unseen, magical force that permeated the area. They were cool under the noonday sun and concealing after dark. They were neither friend nor foe but followed everyone. But within them lay a power and that power was both arcane and active.
Freshman orientation was just beginning and, in the eyes of everyone on campus, a new year had begun. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
