"I have good news." your mother announces to you and your sisters at dinner. "One of the colonies finally accepted my application. We're leaving Earth."
"That's great Mom." your older sister, Stephanie says. "Which one?"
"It's called Obaasan." your mother informs her. "They need chemists like me for their asteroid mining operations."
"Does that mean we don't have to go to school anymore." Rebecca, your younger sister asks innocently.
"I'm afraid not." your mother dissapoints her. "They have very good schools on Obaasan. But I'm sure you'll like them more than your classes here."
That evening, When you're about to get into bed, your mother comes into your room. "Daniel." your mother seems to have trouble thinking of what to say. "I need to discuss something about Obassan with you."
"What is it Mom?" you ask, a little concerned by her tone and the apparent need for privacy.
"The rules in the colony are a little different to Earth." she says. "For boys."
You look at her, confused. "What do you mean."
"Boys have to wear diapers." she manages to say, then braces herself for your reaction.
"What?" you ask.
"Boys on Obaasan are never potty trained." she explains. "They want a society build around nurturing and sharing and believe that keeping boys diapered reminds them of the importance of those things."
"But why just boys?" you ask. "That's not fair."
"Girls are naturally nurturing. Boys tend to be more competitive." she says. "And that's not a bad thing but it does lead to problems when left unchecked. They want to avoid those problems on Obaasan."
