Melanie turned back to her picture and couldn’t help but remember selected events of her past that led her to this moment in time.
Melanie remembered how she was graduating high school soon and how panicked she was to find out that her nose had grown almost a full inch. “Why would it almost double in size, why? Melanie asked her reflection. “It couldn’t be Schnoznose’s curse! It couldn’t!” she told herself over and over as she began to cry on the bathroom floor.
Fast forward a few years and Melanie remembered that night in her senior year of college when her last boyfriend rejected her, how he complained about it being too hard to kiss her. How he hated to maneuver around her three-inch nose. She had been crushed, and she knew it was only going to get worse, because she knew her nose wouldn’t stop growing, not unless she found Schnoznose and made her lift the curse.
It was shortly after that night in college that Melanie had found Schnoznose, and was about to finally force her to lift the curse when she first experienced meeting Principal Darrow. Schnoznose was about to perform the rights, and Melanie was going to finally have the map to the Goblet when an overwhelming presence made Schnoznose manor burst into flames. “Prevent her from ever looking again!” the voice commanded.
Schnoznose smiled, about to destroy her nemesis when a piece of burning timber fell on her from the ceiling pinning her to the ground. “I’m dying,” Schnoznose gasped.
“He’s the one who killed you!” Melanie cried out. “Release me from the curse and I’ll get your revenge for you! I swear!”
But Schnoznose’s loyalty to her master was strong, or maybe her hatred for Melanie was even greater than that, but all she did was smile, and point to Melanie. “Those who can’t, teach!” she laughed before expiring shortly afterwards.
Melanie remembered being surrounded by paramedics, when she felt a compulsion to go back to school and become a teacher, and no matter how much she would try to fight that urge and look for the Goblet, she would always lose out. “You did it Schnoznose, you prevented me from looking,” Melanie said angrily, but you won’t prevent me from finding someone to do it for me!”
And with that last thought Melanie Grimm was catapulted back to the present, thinking about Simon. “Where is that boy?” Ms. Grimm asked herself. “How long does it take to go to the bathroom?” she chided him rising from her seat, her nose slowly wobbling up and down.
