Kathy stood on the back porch, staring at the forest behind her house, beyond the fence. Her parents always let her and her friends play around the edge of the woods during the day, but something told her that smell was coming from deeper inside. They always told her never to go deep into the woods, in case she got lost.
But her curiosity was strong. What was causing that smell? Her favourite cookies seemed to be waiting for her in the woods, which had to mean the witch was calling her!
Part of her was excited, getting a chance to actually see the witch for the first time. Another part of her told her to go back to bed, in case she got in trouble with her parents or the witch.
But the first part pointed out that her parents would never know, and the story of the witch never said she hurt kids, so she'd be safe...right?
With only her buttoned pyjamas and slippers, the little girl gave in to her curiosity, and began walking toward the fence gate. She would only take a little look and go home. Just to see if there was a cottage out in the forest. Then she'd go straight home.
