High school students find a dictaphone able to change reality

This choice: Rika shows the Dictaphone to a friend of hers!  •  Go Back...
Chapter #7

Kayla's intro!

by: Detective Barricade Author IconMail Icon
In the morning, Rika wakes up. That had been one heck of a crazy dream, suddenly being able to speak English almost flawlessly and... she notices Mizuru and her cage missing. The Japanese girl begins to panic when she notices the bed and its occupant sleeping next to hers, and the black and silver recording device on her nightstand that made it all possible. The humanoid bat might be seen as ugly or unnatural to people not into anthros/furries as they're called, but to Rika, she's beautiful. "Hey! Time to get up for school!" she says, smiling.

Mizuru's ears wiggle slightly before she yawns and opens her eyes. "Alright. Uh, I think it's your turn to have first dibs on the shower today, so be kind and don't use up all the hot water." she replies.

Rika nods, her memories saying they take turns for having the bathroom first rather than fight over it. She proceeds to go take her shower and freshen up for the day ahead. When she returns, it's all she can do to not panic as Mizuru looks over the Dictaphone. There's nothing recorded on it currently, but they can't afford to be careless in what they record in it, least of all her friend who doesn't know what it does yet. "Mizuru! Put that down immediately before you do something you'll regret!"

"Are you threatening me over this little recording device?" Mizuru asks, confused but setting it down only for Rika to take it hastily.

"No, just... This Dictaphone is possibly the most powerful and dangerous object out there. Whatever is recorded in it becomes true, though only its user knows reality has changed. I messed with it last night, but since deleted what I recorded on it."

"...Okay, I knew you always had an active imagination, Rika, but you're seriously expecting me to believe someone just left a reality bending thing for just anyone to find?"

Expecting as much, Rika records, "From now on, Mizuru and I notice all changes made by the Dictaphone." After the sparkler effect, she records, "The door of this room is purple."

No sooner does she record this that the door turns purple. Mizuru's jaw falls open in shock. "Holy shit... That door's always been purple, yet I just watched it turn purple! There's so many possibilities with this thing..." She pauses the thought to go take her shower.

The two of them have breakfast soon after, with Rika noting her mom, Megumi, only slightly batting an eye. Megumi has never really liked animals, but has less issue with Mizuru now than when she was just a bat. The girls leave and hop on the bus, with Mizuru turning heads, especially boys. The head-turning continues when they arrive at school, and Rika's enjoying the attention her friend is drawing. Nobody knows where Mizuru came from, only that she started attending school about the same time Rika did. Her personality has made both of them a few friends.

Soon though, they cross paths with Vanessa Barnes, whose influence still leaves the two of them as only marginally popular. "I see the freak and her human lackey are traversing the halls like it's normal. What the fuck are you anyway?" she remarks snidely. She really isn't interested in the answer, just teasing Mizuru for not being human.

"I'm the god-damn Batgirl! But you know what, Barnes? You're right! I am a freak!" Mizuru replies, smiling up at the school queen.

"Indeed, so why don't you-"

"What I really need is a freak flag to wave high! Could you be nice and buy me one? I'm sure it's chump change to you... No? Oh fine then, back to your regularly scheduled bitchiness..." Mizuru laughs and she and Rika walk away, leaving Vanessa red in the face with anger. They can't do much against her, but they can twist some of her insults into a positive light. "Hey, I might be a bit freaky, but at least I'm nicer than her!"

The classes go by as usual, with Mizuru trying to be a good student as far as Rika can see. Probably so she doesn't get kicked out. The bat's charms have convinced Vlad Barnes, Vanessa's father, to ignore his daughter's demands to convince the school board to have Mizuru thrown out... for now, anyway.

At lunch, a girl approaches Rika and Mizuru's table and asks, "Uh, can I sit here?"

"Sure, Kayla! Actually, you want to see something neat?" Mizuru replies happily.

Rika's alarmed, but lets the girl take a seat. Kayla is an... odd girl. She always has her hair dyed a silvery blue color and apparently dreams of joining the school swim team, but is a terrible swimmer. Her confidence levels are also a tad lacking, probably why she seems to have a thing for sharks. The highlight of her year is always the Discovery channel's Shark Week. "Thanks... Um, sure, what's this neat thing we're talking about?"

Rika pulls out the Dictaphone, showing it, but not letting go of it. "Not to sound rude, but... um... that's kind of ordinary..." Kayla remarks.

Just as Vanessa's about to investigate, Rika quickly records, "Nobody cares about what's going on at this table between myself, Mizuru, and Kayla. Kayla notices this." and with that, Vanessa stops, shakes her head, then turns away.

"W-whoa... So this thing makes everything recorded in it real? Cool! With this, I could swim like a fish! Or we could make Barnes look broke! Or... or make Mizuru human!" Kayla goes over several ideas.

"Nah, I like what I am too much to change. I mean, when those folks figured out I was real, Rika's story views went through the roof!" Mizuru says.

"Y-yeah, I've read that story... The Kayla character is based on me, isn't she?"

"Well... maybe her timidness is a little exaggerated, but..."

Kayla snatches the Dictaphone from Rika's hand, seizing an opportunity to better her life a little bit... or a lot. She's kind of idolized Mizuru for being different and proud of it, and feels honored that Rika had created a character in her story based on her. Now she has the chance to do the impossible, and she's taking it. "I'm physically the same as the Kayla in Rika's story, and have her abilities." she records, shivering in delight at what's to come.

She hasn't long to wait, as her hair retains its silvery blue color becomes natural. The 5'3" girl inches taller and gaining an actual bust while her clothes reshape a bit to show off the burgeoning curves. Her teeth become much pointier. Her front turns white while her back turns grey, as well as a dorsal fin protruding from it. A tail forms behind her while her hands (and presumably feet) become just slightly webbed. Soon the change is complete, and the school has another anthropomorphic creature in its halls.

"W-wow... Damn, I'm an awesome swimmer now!" Kayla cheers, quickly placing her hands over her mouth, the 6'2" great white shark girl (the most infamous of sharks being her favorite, but disliking the Jaws movies) fearing she might be saying something off.

"Uh, nobody cares about what's going on here but us, and we can tell you've changed. So you wanted this?" Rika says, trying to retrieve the Dictaphone but Kayla not relinquishing it just yet.

"Yep! I'm in part my favorite animal, and now part of the swim team. I'm totally Jawsome! ...Okay, that was a horrible pun..."

"Give the Dictaphone back now, Kayla. It's not yours." Mizuru requests sternly, hoping the girl listens and doesn't just blow her off.
