High school students find a dictaphone able to change reality
This choice: Bonnie jokingly makes a recording about Lexi quieting down  •  Go Back...
Chapter #6

Magically Quiet

May all your wishes come true” Bonnie mused, looking at the little dictaphone she’d found in the package Lexi had brought in for her.

Lexi was loudly, as usual, talking about the advantages and disadvantages of the games they had to play. This one takes too long. This one is pure luck, there’s no skill involved at all. This one is for kids

Sultana and Deborah listened to the redhead while Bonnie jokingly lifted the dictaphone, pressed the Record button, and made a quick statement.

“Lexi is too loud and should quiet down,” Bonnie stated, just loud enough for the others to hear her and laugh.

Lexi laughed as well, before turning back to the different options. Her loud voice slowly dwindled down to normal and beyond. She soon began to whisper that maybe they should just play poker.

All of them snapped their heads around to look right at Lexi, who seemed just as confused as the rest of them to be talking with all the force of a church mouse.

“What the hell?” Bonnie blurted, looking down at the dictaphone in her hand before realizing that Lexi must be kidding. However, the redhead really was convincing.

A fleeting daydream of some sort of reality-altering device having come into her possession swept through Bonnie’s mind, but she laughed it off.

Unless…

“We all want to play Goldeneye on the old N64 in the corner,” Bonnie quietly said into the device, not wanting the others to hear.

“Wow. I haven’t seen this in forever,” Deborah said as they watched her digging behind the stack of board games. Her rear bobbed up and down behind her for a while before she came back up holding the little gray cartridge. “We should play Goldeneye!” she said to the others.

Everyone agreed, even Bonnie, who’s mind had been far off at that moment. While Deborah set everything up, Bonnie’s interest in the device had become complete.

“There’s no way this is real,” she murmured.

“Try something impossible,” Lexi said in her ear.

Bonnie jumped, not having heard her friend come up behind her. Lexi was reading the note that came with the package while trying not to worry that she couldn’t raise her voice even if she tried.

“Like what?” Bonnie asked, unsure. “How about…” she pressed the Record button, “the can of Coke in my hand becomes a glass of wine.”

The others turned and they all leapt back in surprise as red aluminum can disappeared, immediately replaced by a stemmed glass half full of what looked like red wine.

She saw a button for deleting the previous recording, hit it, and watched the wine disappear and the Coke pop back into her hand.

“Is that magic?” Deborah asked, moving in nearer.

“It’s impossible,” Sultana quietly added, standing back like she thought it might jump out of her friend’s hand and start biting.

“Can you fix my voice?” Lexi asked.

Bonnie quickly recorded that Lexi’s voice would return to normal.

“What the fuck?!?” Lexi nearly yelled, hopefully not enough for Bonnie’s family to hear upstairs. “It’s freaking magic. We’ve got to use that thing,” she continued, and they could all see the feisty redhead’s mind going a mile a minute.

“Why don’t we think and talk about it while we play Goldeneye?” Bonnie asked, stepping towards the old gaming system.

Everyone agreed, not realizing that they were still being compelled to play the old shooter by the dictaphone that Bonnie kept in her hand.

“Maybe we can do both?” Lexi asked them all. “Whoever wins the match gets a wish?”
