Dan Jackson had just been through the long process of being terminated. Having exhausted all the avenues and defences he could make the allegations had finally run their course and he was no longer a teacher.
His union rep, had abandoned him, and his personal possessions had already been cleared out. It was more by instinct than any rational thought that he checked his pigeon hole for any last messages.
He was a little surprised to find a stuffed padded bag waiting for him. A hope that it was a farewell present from his friends and colleagues swelled in his heart.
Tipping it out, he wasn't sure what he expected to find, as the dictaphone fell into his outstretched hand. A card fell out afterwards, in his haste to catch it, he almost sent the dictaphone crashing to the floor. It was only just caught between his finger, as he gripped the dictaphone, and twisted his hand to read it.
"To the one who will find this
Here's a present, just for you
Coming right from the abyss
May all your wishes come true"
It was an oddity in this day and age, when a smartphone could record any random thought. He mused on the gift, what the words meant and whether it was an insult or a genuine gift from a stranger...
Pressing the record button, his thoughts were unformed. Curious if it worked, or even had batteries, as the reels started to spin, he found himself speaking.
