Rebecca tried not to burst out laughing at the thought of fat, nerdy, shy Ronald Dwebble asking out a girl.
“My little man is growing up,” said Ronald's mother. “I'm sorry to embarrass you, honey. It's just that I'm so thrilled to see you finally coming out of your shell.”
Rebecca felt a pang of guilt. She didn't really know Ronald, but she could somehow still empathize with a mother who wanted to see her son happy.
She must know what a loser he is, but nevertheless she hopes and prays he'll find a way to fit in and be happy.
And she probably has no idea just how cruel Rebecca and the other popular kids at school have been to her little boy over the years.
“Uh, I think I should just get to school,” Rebecca said to Ronald's mother, suddenly unable to face the woman.
“Have a great day at school, sweetie!” said Ronald's mother. “I think you look very handsome today. Any girl at that school would be lucky to be dating you.”
Ronald Dwebble on a date, thought Rebecca with a mixture of disgust and guilt. She still thought the overweight, social recluse was an ugly, pathetic geek. But at the same time, Rebecca was now starting to see first-hand some of the silent, hidden pain Ronald must live with.
It was no fun being him!
Grabbing Ronald's heavy book bag, Rebecca heaved a sigh and began trudging out the door.
“Oh, I give up!” Rebecca said, because all of this was really very difficult for her!
But not now, not yet! She headed out to school!
As Rebecca she was used to go to school by her own car, a nice sporty red convertible, but now she had to walk.
