The final conflict has been resolved. Commander Shepard is victorious, and the galaxy is saved. It is a moment of great triumph that is over all too quickly. But this time the intrepid commander doesn't find her hard work undone by some nefarious time loop, forcing her to relive the last three years of her life over and over. In fact, it's the other way around.
Somehow, almost on accident, Shepard pierced through some higher force in the universe and found a way to jump backwards, revert to some sort of previous state and do things differently. It was quite a shock at first, jumping all the way back to the shakedown run of the SR-1 with all the experiences and memories of what would come, but when Shepard realized what she could do, everything seemed to change. Sure at first she was tempted to fulfill some hedonistic thrills, and who wouldn't in that situation, but Shepard had more noble aspirations.
It was tricky at first; some things were difficult to change, like they were set variables destined to happen in a certain way. Like another famous space-faring hero though, Shepard did not believe in the no-win scenario, and through sheer effort and persistence began to bend things to her will. An inhumanly fast quick draw on some drones to save Jenkin's life. A masterfully executed plan to set off the bomb on Virmire without a sacrifice from Kaiden or Ashley. A mad charge at a gunship just before it gunned down Garras Vakarian. Even a well-timed crippling shot on a Cerberus assassin before he plunged a blade through Thane Krios. It all took more tries and redoes then she could have imagined, maybe several life times worth, but in the end it was worth it as she dealt the finishing blow to the Reaper threat, saving Earth well before the vile machines could reduce it to rubble as they had in a previous timeline.
Call it cheating or a cheap way to win, but Shepard got her happy ending. Perhaps not a perfect one, but as close to perfect as one could hope. Of course, with all that timeline fudging she's been doing, her ability to jump backwards is getting a bit fuzzy, and the next time she loops backwards, even for a moment, some things might be more permanent then expected...
