Chapter #5

A Pathfinder and her Spiky Girlfriend

“You don’t have to eat it.”

“No, I want to! Seriously! It looks delicious!”

“It must, since you’ve just been looking at it for the last three minutes.”

It was date night for Sara Ryder and her girlfriend Vetra Nyx. The Turian had somehow managed to acquire all the ingredients necessary to prepare the Earth dish known as meatloaf, and prepared nice romantic dinner for them to share in the Pathfinder’s spacious (and more importantly private) quarters.

“Yup! I’m eating with my eyes before I eat with my mouth.” Maybe it was a trick of the lighting created by the candles in the middle of the small round table they were sat at, but Sara was pretty sure the meatloaf was orange, which, last she checked, was not the color it was supposed to be. With a shaky Sara gripped her fork and cautiously speared a chunk of the loaf. She raised the fork up to her mouth and put the meat on her tongue after a moment of hesitation. “Mmm… so yummy and… crunchy…” Awful as it tasted, the young brunette couldn’t bring herself to spit it out for fear of hurting her beloved spiky girlfriend’s feelings, and her body refused to swallow it, so it just stated on her tongue as she winced and chewed it into a gooey paste.

When their relationship began about three months ago, Sara was surprised how easily Vetra adapted to having a Human lover. The much taller woman seemed to just instinctually know how to make things work, while Sara expected they would both need to do a little research before they got into the swing of things. Unfortunately, there was one thing that didn’t come naturally to Vetra, nor did researching help her any, and that one thing was cooking food suitable for Human consumption. It wasn’t her fault, really. How could she make good food when she couldn’t taste test it without making herself sick?

Vetra found it hard to watch as her short Human lover struggled with the first bite of the meal she had made. Even if the faces Sara was making were cute, Vetra didn’t like that they were ones of disgust caused by her terrible cooking. “Ryder, spit that out before you choke on it.”

Vetra sounded more tired and disappointed than upset, so the Pathfinder listened, lifting a napkin up to her mouth and spitting out the rancid meat. Once it was out the taste still lingered, so she tried to wash it down with some of her wine, and when that didn’t work she scrubbed her tongue with another napkin. “Vetra, I love you, but that was terrible. You are just the worst at this.” Ryder said once she finally got the bitter taste out of her mouth.

“Yeah. I know you Humans have the saying practice makes perfect, but I think at this rate my practice is going to give you food poisoning.” It was meant as a joke, but the couple knew it was way too close to truth for their liking. “So much for romantic dinners…”

As bad as that meatloaf was, and it was bad, it didn’t make Sara feel nearly as sick as seeing Vetra looking so dejected did; like watching someone kick a puppy. “Don’t say that, babe. We can still have romantic meals.”

Vetra pulled her face out of her hands and looked up at Sarah with sad eyes. “We can? How?”
