"You know, I don't think I'm up for that whole burrito. I'm going to hit the salad bar," Madison said. Cassi had a disappointed look on her face, but walked over to the mexican booth by herself.
Madison hadn't exactly told the truth. She was hungry, and it hadn't taken much for Cassi to talk her into a burrito. However, Kelly made a good point. Madison's parents ate healthy and did not often buy junk food to keep around the house. Madison realized that her habits had already changed a bit in just a couple of weeks away from home. Not enough to gain any weight, at least she didn't think so. Still, better to be careful, especially since she hoped to get drunk later.
Good intentions do not always overcome an empty stomach. As Madison moved down the line, she found a lot of things that looked good. Cheese was a must, maybe a few croutons too...ooh, they have bacon bits! They even had some pasta salad, so she added a little bit on the side. Of course, she'd need to add ranch dressing too, and it ended up being a generous amount, as Madison did not normally pour dressing on with a ladle.
She rejoined the girls at their table. Cassi stuck out her tongue playfully, then took a bite out of her burrito, which was covered in sauce. Madison felt a little regret but dutifully dug into her salad.
"You made the right choice, Madison. Your body will thank you for it later," Kelly said, giving Cassi a brief glance.
Cassi sat her burrito down and glared at them. "I'll have you know that I have always eaten what I want, and never struggle with my weight. In fact, I won a pie eating contest last year. I just have a fast metabolism that burns all this off, so don't be jealous. Besides, that ranch dressing isn't exactly good for you."
Kelly grinned. "That's why we got the LOW FAT ranch, right Madison?"
"Actually, I didn't see any low fat ranch dressing over there..."
"Shhhhh! You're supposed to have my back on this!"
Cassi and Megan laughed, and after a moment Madison and Kelly joined them. Despite the girls' differences, they had quickly grown to like each other. Ginger didn't seem to be a part of their group anymore, but that's how it goes in the early days at university. They quickly moved onto other topics, talking about classes they had, people they'd met, things they'd discovered on campus. It was a very exciting time for all of them.
As it turned out, Megan knew of a party going on at a nearby apartment complex her friend lived at, and the girls agreed to go over there. The beer was plentiful and the girls began mingling, solo cups in hand. Madison, with her good looks and wit, attracted plenty of attention, and she soon found herself sitting on a couch with a sophomore named Matt. Matt was studying biochemistry, and had a good sense of humor. He was cute, though Madison didn't usually fall for the geeks, and she felt a little repulsed when one of Matt's friends stopped by briefly to tell him about the new videogame he'd bought. Still, she was enjoying their conversation, there wasn't anyone else especially hot to talk to, and most importantly, he was fetching beers and keeping the creepier guys away.
She heard Cassi call out to her, and turned just in time to see Cassi stumble and fall on the carpet. Kelly dashed over to pick her up, as Cassi slurred that she was fine. "You've gotta be kidding me...she couldn't have had more than two, maybe three drinks."
Madison shook her head. "Must be a lightweight. I'll take her home."
"No no, you stay. I'll take her back," Kelly said, quickly glancing at Matt and then back to her. Madison smiled. She was lucky to have good friends.
What will Madison do now?
