Having gotten the device to work on some level, John realizes it should be tested, but if it's tested on a person, and turn them into something, then they are that object until the device is perfected, so that can't work. I mean, even if John was that mischievous, there would be a missing person and people asking questions. But, Jim, John's lab partner in the same division, he might have an idea.
John goes to Jim and shows him the prototype, telling him all about it, but its current limits, being unable to work on inanimate forms, so if it changes a person, they are stuck for good. Jim nods and rubs his chin, then says "But if we use it to turn a person into a fully functioning device that CAN transform objects, then we can use that to perfect it, and restore the person" It sounds possible, and at the very least, a safe way to test the device with a plan in place to restore someone. Question is, who is going to be turned into the new device?
