Although William was fascinated with how the deer's body had bloated up to massive proportions, he wasn't inserted himself with becoming the victim of the dire wolves. Setting off in the opposite direction of the hunt, William made his way deeper into the grasslands.
The aspiring adventurer was able to travel through the plains for quite some time without any disturbances. Aside from spotting the occasional pack of rotund wild deer, there were not many other creatures around. In fact, there wasn't much of anything else in the area aside from tall, waist-high grass and the occasional barren tree.
That is, there wasn't much else until William stumbled upon a kind of oasis. There was a sizable lake of clear, crisp water. Surrounding the lake were various different bushes and tree, some of which had ripe, plump fruits hanging from the branches.
William approached the oasis. A lone wild deer was drinking from the lake. It spotted him and waddled away, the deer's flabby flanks and rump wobbling violently as it trotted away.
Noticing the girth of the deer, William was struck with a thought: How did wildlife out here get so plump? The dire wolves clearly got huge from fattening up their prey and gorging themselves on its blubber. But deer only ate plants and drank water. So how was it that an herbivore blew up to be several hundred pounds?
A good question, but William didn't want to waste time theorizing right now. Instead, he wanted to take advantage of the situation. He was feeling particular thirsty and hungry from the traveling he did, so it would serve William well to utilize the resources he just found. What does he do first?
