"But Mom!" you complain. "I'm 8 years old now. I don't need a babysitter."
"Daniel." Your mother says as she finishes packing. "Your father and I will be gone all weekend. We can't leave you alone for so long."
"But I can take care of myself." you whine.
"No." she says. "Kate will be staying here with you and you had better behave for her." She slams her suitcase closed as if to punctuate the statement.
You can see that there's no point arguing further so head to your room to sulk.
From your room you hear the doorbell ring and your mother greet Kate. Soon after that your mother and father let themselves into your room.
"We're leaving now." Your mother says.
"Be good for Kate." your father reminds you.
Then they are gone and you are left in the care of Kate. She lives down the street from you. She's 16 and has been babysitting you since you were 4. She's not that bad and usually lets you get away with more than your parent but just the idea that you need a babysitter hurts your developing ego.
"Hi Daniel." Kate knocks on your door a few minutes later.
"Go away." you reply. "I don't need a babysitter. I'm not a baby"
She lets herself in anyway. "Come on Daniel. I thought we were friends."
"Fuck off." you tell her, annoyed that she ignored your request that she go away.
She looks hurt but just closes the door and leaves.
