Danielle had been working on her history paper for the past week and tonight she had to get it finished. She was very grateful for the opportunity to go to school out of state, and felt incredibly lucky that she was able to avoid having to pay for housing because her Aunt Tanya lived 15 minutes from campus. The downside of living with Aunt Tanya, is that she is incredibly strict. She had been that way ever since Danielle was a little girl and stayed with her aunt and cousins over the summer breaks while her parents vacationed around the world.
The bedroom Danielle slept and studied in was the same bedroom she shared with her cousin, Stacy, who was around the same age. It had barely changed since then. Bright pink walls, lavender unicorns stenciled on, with white trim. The windows were adorned with baby pink curtains and a large matching rocking chair sat by the window. Even the bed was the same a twin lavender frame with a plastic lined mattress as Stacy had a little bedwetting problem until she was about 6. Danielle used to feel bad for her as her aunt’s solution to this problem was a little unique. It seemed to have worked though as Stacy was only punished a handful of times and her older brother Jason only once. Danielle and Stacy actually picked the color scheme of this room together; she smiled, thinking that was more than likely why she had kept it even after she moved out. But, Danielle couldn’t think about this too long, as her assignment was due tonight.
One very important rule her aunt had was that she must put all of her homework assignments with the due date on the whiteboard on the refrigerator and show her when they were completed and submitted. Danielle had 5 hours left to go and 3 more pages to research write and annotate. She took the last sip of her apple juice, glad for the sugar, but wishing her aunt allowed her to have caffeine despite being 20 years old. She sighed, reminding herself how grateful she was to have somewhere to stay rent free. As she grew more and more focused she ignored the growing pressure in her bladder, and the sleep pulling her eyelids in favor of getting her assignment done. She truly wanted to do well in school to prove to her aunt and her parents that she could handle it, and even more so, she wanted to avoid the punishment that came with missing an assignment.
