This choice: Jack flips the coin, then looks at Jenny or someone else  •  Go Back...
Chapter #7

D2: Jack flips the coin and looks at someone else

    by: Unknown
On a whim, Jack flipped the coin into the wishing well. His eyes flitted over to a vendor selling cheap jewelry, as he considered whether Jenny might want to browse them. A pretty blonde woman was in the middle of trying to get the attention of passerby's.

"Hey, Jack. What are you looking at?" Jenny asked. Jack turned to her, unaware of how lucky he had been.
"Oh. Did you want to look for some earrings or something?"

They turned back to the vendor, where a scene was taking place. The seller was making an awful lot of panicked noise. Her attention, which before had been on selling jewelry, was exclusively on getting someone to take her to the hospital. As she stepped out from behind the stall, the shape of her belly caught Jack's attention. She was apparently in labor.

"Let's get out of here," whispered Jenny hurriedly.
"Hold on," said Jack. "Let's make sure she has some help."
Jenny hesitated to respond, but she nodded.

Jack hurried over as well as he could to the panicking saleswoman. Her outfit had somehow burst several buttons; she looked horribly disheveled.

"Do you need help, ma'am?"

"Yes, I need help, you little shit! Oh!" the woman cried. Another set of contractions overwhelmed her, and she lowered herself onto the ground. Jack couldn't believe that this was happening.

"Hey!" he yelled at another vendor. "Is there anyone that can get her to the hospital?" Another saleswoman hurried over to the scene.

"What? But she wasn't...how did---what?"
"Hey," Jack repeated. "You need to get her to the hospital." But it was no use. The blond woman's co-worker was in some kind of bewildered terror.

Jack sighed. This was supposed to be a pleasant day. "Jenny, let's drive her over."
"What?" she whispered.
"Now, Jenny," Jack asserted. He grabbed the blonde woman's hand and pulled her to her feet. "We'll get you to the hospital, Miss." She accepted, albeit begrudgingly.

It was probably the tensest half hour of Jack and Jenny's lives to that point. The hospital was thankfully close, but while getting to Jack's car they half expected the woman to give birth right then.

There wasn't any need to stay with the woman at the hospital. All they could do was hope that things went well. So Jack drove Jenny back to her car at the mall, where they recuperated. There wasn't anything that they really had in mind to say. It was all a little strange. Jenny, especially, was affected. She seemed oddly flushed and didn't have much to say. Finally, she held Jack's hand.
"You were really cool," she murmured.
Jack wondered at that. "Not really. If it had gotten any more serious, I wouldn't have been better than any doctor or anything like that." Jenny shushed him. She kissed him on the lips. It was a different kiss than he was used to from her, but passionate nonetheless. When she separated, she buried her face into his chest, concealing it.

What was going on, he wondered? A greedy part of him thought maybe this was a chance for fireworks that night. Then again, Jenny was acting overwhelmed, and she didn't seem in the right state of mind. He thought of his options. On the one hand, he and his girlfriend could spend the night together. On the other hand, she would probably respect him more in the long run if he didn't push it.
