This choice: when she is working her low paying job at a bakery • Go Back... "Hannah, are you finished with restocking the shelf yet?" Ms. Berkeley questioned far from Hannah's eyesight, referring to the kitchen store room where most of the baked goods are prepared.. Hannah let down the crate of preserved fruits, huffing due to already lifting three crates already. "Just this last one, Ms.Berkeley!"
"That's my girl" The co-owner of the locally famous "Berkeley Bakers Bakery" proclaimed. Hannah smiled in satisfaction, the woman was like a second mother to her. God knows that her first mother did anything for her. So hearing a declaration of affection warmed the girl's heart greatly. Although Hannah wasn't paid much, with her paychecks being under the counter, she still thanked the lord for the job she was given.
She lifted up the last crate in the store, the top shelf being a bitch of a thing to get something on it;that rush that one gets when finishing a hard job was enough to counteract that. She wiped her brow with her apron, the sweat sticking to her like fly paper. A knock on the open door indicated someone wanted to talk with her, turning her head, Hannah saw Mr. Berkeley at the open doorway. His walrus mustache looked ridiculous, if not contrasted against his powerful looking body. One would think that being fifty years old would degrade him, but the man still looked like he could deal a few more punches in life.
"You done here, Hannah?" Mr. Berkeley asked Hannah. She nodded her head and Mr. Berkeley put a thumbs up as a show of appreciation. When he was about to walk away though, he stopped and turned back towards Hannah."Will it be too much to ask if you could look at the under storage facility? The missus and me want a few things reshuffled down there.. We'll pay extra for the work done."
Hannah did think over the offer and nodded her head, what was the worse that could happen? Hannah shrugged and gave the man a smile."Sure thing, Mr. Berkeley."
Mr. Berkeley smiled and handed the girl a list of things to change and Hannah read the list off. She saluted the man and began to think over the list.
Hannah passed the large man and walked to were the stairs to the under storage was. She descended the flight of stairs down to her destination, flicking a switch to her side to illuminate the room. Various crates and shelves filled with contained food covered the area.
"Lets get going then." Hannah proclaimed and began her task of changing the area around her. Twenty minutes in her task, Hannah noticed something strange. While moving a couple of glass jars towards one shelf, she noticed that a container of some sorts were hidden behind the jars. She took a closer look and grabbed the strange object. She looked over the container in her hands, on it was the name "Pickkets Great Cherries", not somebody that Hannah knew.
"Its looks kinda new, I wonder why the Berkeley didn't use you?" Hannah wondered aloud, she opened the cap and the most delightful smell filled the air: cherries. The smell wasn't anything that Hannah ever smelled before and she smiled in delight of it. She reattached the cap to the top of the jar and looked at it greatly. She just had to keep it; if this is what the cherries smelled like, what would they taste like?
