The newborn vampire glanced to her left, where the carcass of a moose lay, drained of its blood. Her stomach churned, so distended with the life-giving fluid that she would have been in agony had she still been human. As it was, she just felt swollen. And uncomfortable. And...
"Definitely not hungry." She lay her head into the pine needles and closed her eyes. The wind was cold on the sliver of belly explosed by her hoodie, but she barely felt it. She was full of the warm, salty soup of vitality, glutted with it, bloated like a tick. She hadn't wanted to drink the beast dry, but her guardian had been very insistent, holding her head gently but firmly to the furry neck until Bella had consumed every drop.
"That's wonderful, Bella. I don't see any attacks in your future."
"I...I don't think I need to drink this much," Bella said.
Alice frowned. "Bella, you know how dangerous your cravings are right now. If we want to keep the humans safe from your hunger, the best way to do it is by ruining your appetite completely. You understand, right?"
Bella nodded weakly, stifling a burp.
"Good. We'll be hunting again tomorrow."
Tomorrow? Bella thought incredulously. After a whole moose? I won't be able to eat for a week!
