Chapter #3A bored housewife by: XYXX   You are 26-year-old Debora Hall. You were Debora Jenkins until about ten months ago, when you married your love William, a wonderful event preceded by a wonderful courtship and followed by an equally wonderful honeymoon.
And now that that's all done with, you're quite bored. Today is another day of sitting around the house while William is away at work. You don't want a job of your own because you're preparing to a full-time mother. Problem is, William seems scared by the prospect of having kids, even though you'll be the one devoting yourself to their care.
The good news is that William has been rocketing up the corporate ladder and bringing in loads of money, so when you do have children, they'll be well provided for. Unless, of course, he continues to blow increasing amounts of cash on things to distract you from needling him about starting a family. His latest and most extravagant such purchase is the virtual reality helmet which is now in your hands and hooked up to your computer via an assortment of wires and little boxes that seems more complicated than it really needs to be. A second helmet lies on the desk, so William can join you when he gets home.
It's a sophisticated (if not sophisticated-looking) piece of work, but apparently the real reason this stuff is so expensive is because if they allowed just anyone to create their own simulation, they'd... use up all their gigabytes or something. You don't really understand technology very well, but you think you can get this thing working. You've started up the program, and now the screen is telling you to put on your "virtual interface headset", which you assume means the helmet.
So you make yourself comfortable in the chair and carefully place the helmet on your head. Everything goes black for a frightening second, and then your vision is filled by a menu consisting of the options "Create Simulation", "Enter Simulation" and "Disengage". You try to lift your arm, but find that you can't. You can't even feel it, in fact. You would gasp in response to this, but you can't do that either. You frantically wonder how you're supposed to select anything, but then the "Create Simulation" option flashes by itself. Apparently the system just knows what you want it to do. You're not sure if that's amazing, or amazingly scary.
The next screen, if you can call it that, doesn't seem to have any actual options on it. It begins with just the words "Think of something." in large letters. Can you really create any virtual world imaginable just by thinking of it? As your mind races with possibilities, lines of text fly in and out of your vision too fast to read. You're apparently supposed to focus on something and read what the computer has to say about it. So what will you think of?   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
