Online there were plenty of violent games with varying levels of realism. From soft core adventure games without any pain receptors and enemies that had to throw fights to the most gritty and realistic military shooters ever conceived, where every bit of blood, sweat, and tear of the battlefield perfectly replicated. That and everything outside and in between, with new content added daily. Unfortunately you couldn't go online, even with the most convincing fake ID and a million protective measures law enforcement would eventually realize who you were and track down the whereabouts of your body, so you were in a closed off circuit, completely alone with AI and a more limited range of options due to the more limited capacity of one man virtual reality machines (VRMs) as opposed to online connected which could outsource power and data. That being said your cohorts were nice enough to keep you entertained, generally adding in a new simulation every once in a while to keep you from going stir crazy. At the moment as you scrolled through your available options one caught your eye, a violent simulation.
Here's the thing most people don't seem to "get". It's your job to kill people, but you don't actually enjoy killing per se. It was something you were good at doing sure, but it wasn't something you took pleasure out of. Causing pain, causing sadness, causing death, all of that gave you no satisfaction, it honestly did nothing for you. What you enjoyed was the thrill of battle, the sheer rush of adrenaline that came from the perils of combat. You didn't enjoy killing, but you loved the rush of danger! It was why this simulation caught you: a combat game with no pain, and the AI set to enjoy death but not actively seek it out. No guilt, just a rush.
You picked that one, and soon found yourself in...
