Chapter #4

A Gingerbread House?

    by: Spots Author IconMail Icon
John couldn't believe what he was seeing before him. However, his nose didn't lie. It could smell the scent of sugar and baked goods with undeniable clarity as he stepped into a clearing which in the center stood a house made entirely of gingerbread. The roof was covered in icing clearly held the shingles together, the windows adorned with sugar wafers for shutters, decorated with peppermints, gum drops, and piped buttercream. a small path of hard candy, imitating cobblestone lead up to the door, the 'lawn' adorned with giant lollipops as ornaments.

'This has to be where the children are,' thought John, though his mouth watered at the sight. He had a sweet tooth of course, brought on by his mothers care, but even he knew a lure when he saw it. Cautiously, he drew this sword, slowly approaching and resisting the urge to taste test the sweets. For all how delicious they looked, this was clearly magic and would probably put him to sleep, or something worse. If storybooks were to believe, this was just the type of thing a witch would concoct. First, he slowly circled the house, trying to see through the windows for movement. Seeing nothing, he moved to the door, first listening, before slowly and carefully opening it up, careful not to make a sound before moving inside.

So far so good, he thought to himself, perhaps the witch was not home, as he was convinced there had to be one. The inside of the house was saturated with the sweet smell. Despite his best efforts, Johns stomach growled, but he steeled himself, slowly closing the door as he moved in deeper, listening for anything, footsteps, evil cackling, or the whimpers of children. Instead he just heard silence. It was a bit unnerving, as he expected any moment for a gnarled hag to suddenly jump out of a corner or something.

He looked around at the furnishings. Everything seemed to be made of sweets and baked goods, a a couch with marshmallow cushions, a coffee table with a cookie face, hanging pictures which just had more sweets and cookies inside forming repeating patterns. All it did was make him hungry. He moved to the kitchen, sure he would find a witches cauldron hanging at the stove. While there was a stove, there was no cauldron to be seen, only a large chocolate cake sitting there invitingly. John grimaced, trying not to lick his lips, but went on to check the cupboards. No ingredients, just more cookies and sweets to tempt him. Even the door was a sweet biscuit. He searched the top floor, bedrooms with angelfood cake beds, and chairs with marzipan inlay. Even the bathroom had a licorice toilet in it.

No matter where he looked, there seemed to be no actual sign of someone living there though. It had furniture, it had rooms and drawers. Heck it even had a bookcase, but as he looked, nothing actually looked... live in. While fully furnished, it was missing anything that would suggest a person living here. There were no clothing in the closets or drawers, no cutlery or dishes, no dustpans or brooms. While the panty was full of sweets, there were no jars, bags or boxes. He would say it looked abandoned, but at the same time, it was too well kept, there was no dust or disrepair to be seen.

Confused, John went back to the foyer, looking around once more, trying to think of anything he missed...
