It wasn’t exactly automatic, but Cass and Alice had really hit it off by the end of the day. They proved to have quite a bit in common, despite their wildly different personalities and interests, and sort of complemented each other in an odd way. Cass liked to talk, Alice liked to listen—and with plenty of interesting interviews beneath her belt, that meant Cass had a lot of stories to tell. Even as Cass was slowly integrated into the pool of Alice’s coworkers at Gordge, as she met Melissa and Courtney and Victoria and all the other office women, the two women seemed to get along rather nicely. So nicely, in fact, that they continued to kindle their friendship even after the office outing.
Over the next few weeks, the two women continued to keep in touch. There was some texting, a couple of phone calls, but their friendship mostly manifested in a few friendly afternoon lunches together. Being the host of a morning show Cass and Marni were off the clock by around noon, which crept into the latter half of Alice’s two-hour break. A few times, at least once a week, Cass and Alice would meet up at some restaurant around town—often with Melissa and, once these meals became more commonplace, Courtney—and eat lunch together.
Despite her considerable size, Alice was more than willing—almost eager—to order greens and low-calorie options (albeit in rather large portions!) wherever the two of them went; something that Cass was grateful for. With less time than she would have liked to devote to keeping her body toned and lean, and her own lacking self-control as of late, Cass readily braced herself against Alice’s promising amounts of self-restraint.
“I’m trying to lose some weight.” Alice had said with a distasteful curl of her nostril one day at lunch, “Y’know, try and get my Varsity Squad body back.”
And Cass couldn’t have agreed more. Now unaccustomed to her workout routine, the slacking siren was finding it hard to get herself back into the game. It had been at least three weeks since she’d been to the gym, and even longer since she’d actually broken a sweat. Which is, honestly, why she found herself going out with Alice more and more. All Marni wanted to do was go out and club. All those empty calories—that expensive beer and bar food—weren’t good for Cass’ waistline.
However, once Melissa and Courtney became more frequent fixtures in their party of two, temptation once again reared its ugly head.
“Come on Alice, don’t tell me you’re just going to get a salad.” Melissa, another woman whose overall size was comparable to Alice’s, nudged her flabby friend in the flank, “Who comes to a buffet and orders the salad bar?”
“I don’t know…” Alice would say, looking to Cass, “You’re right, I guess… i-it is kind of dumb. Cass, do you want to maybe try out the buffet?”
And of course she would agree—she’d been good for a long time, right? Only taking samples from the Gordge baskets, doing her best not to abuse her discounted meals at the various restaurants around town, picking low-calorie options, the usual. She deserved a reward here and there!
But as Alice’s friends, who were hardly bound to Alice’s lofty ideas of diet and moderation, became more familiar with Cass, they also became more persuasive. Soon Melissa didn’t have to nudge the two dieters into picking the buffet option, and it became something that they indulged in “only when Melissa was around.” But after that, it became Alice breaking down and taking the low road, convincing the poor dieting DJ that it was okay to have a little treat every once in a while. And by the end of it, it just became habit. Pretty soon, Cass was eating at buffets almost every day for lunch!
“Hey Cass, I was gonna try out that singles bar downtown later… wanna head out?” Marni leaned over her stand, arms folded and propping up her head as her feet swung in her chair, “It’s been a while since we just… hung out, y’know?”
“Hm?” Cass smacked her lips, a plastic-wrapped Porky’s Pastries muffin with a big bite taken out of it placed firmly in one hand, “What, like… go clubbing? C’mon Marn, you know if I go out with you tonight, we’ll stay out late. I kinda want to sleep before tomorrow’s show.”
“And? Come on, let’s go out.” Marni pouted, sticking her lower lip out as far as it would go, “I feel like I never see you anymore.”
“Mmpmh…” Cass took another big bite of muffin and swallowed. She poured herself onto her feet, dusting the muffin debris off of her accumulated paunch and out of her shelf-like cleavage, “I know, I swear we’ll hang out soon. But I already told Alice we’d meet up at that new Chinese place for lunch today. Maybe you want to come with?”
“I’ll pass.” Marni puffed, irritated, “Maybe this weekend?”
“This weekend, definitely.” Cass managed through her muffin mouth, “See you then.”
Marni watched as Cass made her way out the door, full rear and thick legs swaying behind her as her biggened belly threatened to pop the buttons on her tightening blouse. She rolled her eyes and whipped out her phone, the responsibility of being her adult supervision and straight man falling on one of her other friends yet again…
